In an era where people seek hope, the lines between fantasy and reality are often blurred. This being particularly true of young Nora Mowwend as she dreams up a make-believe world with Superheroes as antidote to her troubled life.
In Nora’s Alternate Universe, the Black Azira rules with absolute evil. As the Black Azira hatches a cunning plan to allow her evil magic to reign supreme in the Universe, Nora engages the help of her Superhero friends to stop her.
But alas, the Superfriends are in need of help themselves. Batman is in love with Robin; Robin can’t get out of his second-best funk; Spiderman has self-esteem issues and the Incredible Hulk can’t find his temper. Nora finds herself with Aristotle who guides her with the wisdom of the Greek Gods. She is told she shares the bloodlines of the mighty opposites of good and evil, and is the only one who can restore order. With this new faith, Nora uses her Superhuman touch and rallies the Superfriends together to bring the Black Azira down.
Back in the Real Universe, Diana Mowwend is struggling: to cut a decent life for her daughter Nora; and protect herself from her violent and abusive 2nd husband. But the daily cycle of love and violence becomes increasingly desperate and Diana finds that she needs to save Nora from this living hell. She uses the only solution she knows.
As the extent of Diana’s sacrifice becomes clear, Nora realizes that the Superhero she has been searching for lies in her mother.
Journey with Nora as she meshes reality with comic book fiction and finds the human in her Superheroes the same way they find heroes in her humans, and discover that together with epic strength and gigantic courage, understanding, compassion and love are also Superpowers.

Good Night, and Good Luck (1 March, 10pm okto)
Sunday 1 Mar, 10pm (okto)
Good night, and Good Luck takes place during the early days of
broadcast journalism in 1950’s America. It chronicles the real-life
conflict between television news pioneer Edward R. Murrow (David
Strathairn) and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American
Activities Committee. With a desire to report the facts and
enlighten the public, the ground-breaking Murrow, and his dedicated
staff – headed by his producer Fred Friendly (George Clooney) and
(Robert Downey Jr.) in the CBS newsroom – defy corporate and
sponsorship pressures to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics
perpetrated by McCarthy during his communist `witch-hunts’ . A very
public feud develops when the Senator responds by accusing the anchor
of being a communist. In this climate of fear and reprisal, the CBS
crew carries on regardless and their tenaciousness eventually pays off
when McCarthy is brought before the Senate and made powerless as his
lies and bullying tactics are finally uncovered. Yet Murrow and his
team have paid a high price and the show is shifted to a lesser time
slot. Their legacy, however, has remained intact and even
reverberates today as the standard for high quality broadcast journalism.

Aesop was a Greek poet. Born into a life of slavery, he won his liberty as a reward for his learning and wit. However, his sharp tongue, and sense of justice eventually led to his downfall. Maybe he should have paid more attention to his own fables! His wit, his wisdom, and the subtle ways he challenged and encouraged us live on today. Now, we present a fun-filled musical, celebrating just a few of the 665 fables associated with Aesop. Don’t expect the usual fare – we have turned the art of storytelling on its head in order to lead you through the lives, lunches and misadventures of a truly miss-matched band of scruffy, silly and sometimes stubborn creatures, as they slowly and painfully learn life’s little wisdoms, and bigger secrets. Blending Asian aesthetics of mask and movement with Western theatre styles, and combining the spoken word with movement and song – you are sure to be touched, entangled and turned around by this amusing amalgam of fabulous fables however old – or young – you are!

With a nearly 800 year-old history, the boys choir of the St Thomas Church in Leipzig is one of the oldest as well as leading ensembles in the German choral tradition.
The choir is one of the foremost interpreters of the legacy of its famed choirmaster, composer Johann Sebastian Bach – who during his 27 year tenure there composed his most important works – and who built it into an institution of artistic excellence.
While their repertoire ranges from Gregorian to modern music, the heart of the choir’s musical work are motets and Bach cantatas. Oratorios, passions and masses by Bach attract audiences of thousands to their weekly concerts, while concerts at home and since 1920, every major music-centre abroad, showcase the choristers’ versatility.
In Singapore, the 55-member-strong choir accompanied by an organist will perform the works of Bach as well as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, composer and conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in his time, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the latter’s birth.

QUIESCE – in search of liminal space (6 MArch 2009)

QUIESCE – in search of liminal space
- Dates: 6 & March
- Times: 8pm
- Venue: The Substation Theatre
- Admission: $15 from The Substation Box Office
A music and sound performance by sonicbrat (Darren Ng), supported by movement interpretation by dancer Lim Chin Huat and an emotive ambient light show by lighting designer Lim Woan Wen.
Three national award winning artists from Singapore get together to explore the ideology of “liminality” as they present to you their personal take on space, time and emptiness. A minimalist performance that fuses Asian aesthetics and philosophies with multi-disciplinary art forms, QUIESCE is a diegetic performance that questions the rift between personal and cultural dissociations.
Project Summary:
“Liminality is a psychological, neurological, or metaphysical subjective, conscious state of being on the “threshold” of or between two different existential planes. Those who remain in a state between two other states may become permanently liminal.”
QUIESCE is an exploration into “liminal spaces” through multi-disciplinary expressions. Expositing gaps, silences and spaces as thresholds between what is before and what comes after, immersing in the state of betwixt and between.
A quiet collaboration of sound/music, movement and light, three artists gather to explore the notion of space, silence, emptiness and inactivity; of displacements, juxtapositions and ambiguity… in search for a liminal space.

Oscar Wilde’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is one of the most enduringly popular comedies on stage and in film, boasting some of the funniest lines of the English language.
Two dashing Romeos bend the truth to spice up their lives. Jack has invented a brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape his dull country life, and to visit the ravishing Gwendolen. His best friend Algernon also decides to take the name ‘Ernest’ to court Jack’s beautiful ward, Cecily in the country.
Things get messy when everyone ends up together in country and their deceptions are discovered… threatening to spoil their romantic pursuits.
In WILD RICE’s exciting new production, celebrated theatre and film director Glen Goei puts a provocative spin on this comic masterpiece by casting an all-male ensemble – revealing new insights into Wilde’s comedy about courtship, hidden identities, and the foibles of high society.
With a sensational international cast, dressed to the nines by fashion doyen Frederick Lee, and live music by the internationally acclaimed T’ang Quartet, The Importance of Being Earnest promises to be one of the most talked-about theatrical events of 2009. Don’t miss it on any account!
