Love, laughter, conspiracy and drama.
‘Shakespeare in the Park’ returns this May with a sumptuous take on one of the greatest comedies of all time.
Bring a picnic basket and blanket and lie under the stars as the park comes to life like you have never seen before.
In 2007, over 20,000 people came to SRT’s landmark production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Fort Canning Park. This year’s Much Ado About Nothing promises to be twice as much fun.
Whether you want to enjoy a wonderful romantic comedy, be part of a historic event, or just have a picnic, this will be a spectacular evening for young and old.
Much Ado about Nothing is of one of Shakespeare’s best known, light-hearted comedies. The play follows the obstacle filled courtships of two romances – Hero and Claudio, and Benedick and Beatrice. The brilliance of the main plot witnesses Hero and Claudio falling in love at first sight; but as with any immediate attraction, they have a lot to learn about each other. This is accompanied with the humorous bickering of Beatrice and Benedick in their “merry war” of the sexes.
The quintessential romantic comedy is layered with witty and hilarious character interaction between the two couples, as well as a streak of darkness from Don John who conspires against Hero and Claudio’s wedding. In the end though, does it all turn out to be “much ado about nothing”?

“The course of true love never did run smooth.”
After experiencing The Stage Club’s production of Shakespeare’s endearing classic, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, you’ll have some ideas why! This production promises to entertain, enthral and educate.
Lysander loves Hermia; Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius; Demetrius loves…Hermia! Ever defiant, Hermia escapes with Lysander into the surrounding forest where we find the King and Queen of the Fairies, Oberon and Titania, at loggerheads. With the help of Oberon’s cheeky right hand fairy, Puck, the mischief begins and gets somewhat out of hand. Alongside all of this romantic drama we follow the bumbling attempts of a group of local craftsmen rehearsing a love tragedy. The result is a charming and engaging story that will engage audiences young and old.
Coming soon after our recent highly successful productions of Twelfth Night and Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream seeks to continue The Stage Club’s tradition of high quality Shakespearean theatre, bringing out the magic, the music, the mirth, and the underlying menace of one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays.

Terus-terang dan tanpa batas.
Orang bawah, orang atas,
Pintu syurga dapat penyakit,
Rahsia lama sedia di bangkit.
The ones above and the ones below,
The story of five siblings is here for show.
The ones above and the ones below,
The painful truth, life’s ebb and flow.
The ones above and the ones below.
The gate to heaven has fallen ill,
Old family secrets we will reveal.
After the success of ‘How did the Cat get so Fat?’ and ‘Suap’, Zizi Azah returns with her new Malay play, In Search of Wonderland. Zizi Azah will once again collaborate with a power packed creative team, Izmir Ickbal for set, Anaiz Abdul Majid for sound and with a stellar cast behind her made up of several Life! Theatre Awards 2009 winners.
In Search of Wonderland promises a thought provoking performance filled with human compassion and a visual treat that will bring the audience through a multitude of emotions.
In Search of Wonderland brings home closer to our hearts as it plays on the absurdity of familial ties and our attitudes towards those whom we love. Through its subtlety, it offers a reflection into family relationships and through its escape into wonderland, this fantasical story will, hopefully, pull us closer to the reality of our homes and bring families closer together.

Fri & Sat, 08:00PM
Drama Centre Theatre
Standard – S$50, S$40, S$30, S$20
New York-based Singapore playwright Chay Yew collaborates with Italian director Giorgio Barberio Corsetti in a cross-cultural foray featuring a mixed Italian and Asian cast.
Did you know more than a hundred people around the world made your dress? Do you know if your handbag is real or fake? Is your shirt really made in Italy or in China? How much does your blouse really cost?
Visible Cities explores the high stakes realities of international fashion, globalism, immigration and counterfeit culture that traverses two separate continents and narratives. In one story, we meet Bianca, an agoraphobic Italian woman who strikes up an unusual friendship with a Fish in a post-apocalyptic world. In another, we meet an Italian merchandiser and an ambitious Singapore Chinese fashion buyer who visit clothing factories in China. Interspersing these narratives are a sharp glimpse at the real and imagined lives that connect these two stories from two different worlds.
Inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities containing conversations on real and imagined cities between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, Visible Cities is a modern tale that contemplates different cultural journeys, their historical and contemporary realities, and their common interest: trade.

Killingly funny, and totally life-affirming. – The Herald, UK
A song-and-dance cabaret act with a twist – all the performers are dead!! Three dancers join two musicians on stage as a five-piece music hall troupe, dead, desperately downtrodden and travelling on a seemingly never-ending purgatorial tour.
Black comedy, clever yet gruesome lyrics, original live music and slick choreography combine to make an hour-long show of laughter and, possibly, tears. Described by the press as “richly entertaining” and “a spine tingling combination of deadly dance and dark ukulele-based songs”, this show has something for everyone, whether you like dance, music or comedy!
The Cholmondeleys (pronounced “Chumlees”) and the Featherstonehaughs (pronounced “Fanshaws) are led by Artistic Director Lea Anderson, with live music written and performed by composer Steve Blake and ukelele bashing minstrel Nigel Burch of The Flea Pit Orchestra. The show toured UK in 2008 (Glastonbury Festival, Latitude Festival and Edinburgh Fringe), garnering great reviews and audience responses.

Two lonely teenagers, Kirsty and Gideon find refuge from their stressed and unhappy family lives in a deserted community centre. Neither realises they share the same refuge, until one fateful evening…
From their first tentative and defensive meeting, a friendship begins to bloom. Through the paintings of Gideon, and out of their imagination, a magical kingdom is created.
Both begin to develop a new and precious friendship as they explore their fears, family relationships and identities through the magical stories they share; gradually becoming more and more able to face the harsh realities of our own world.
A breathtaking production with a lot to say to young people, teens, and adults – about looking for beauty and thinking beyond the five ‘C’s – about breaking out of the mould and finding out what is truly valuable.

Appreciating Film 101 by Asian Film Archive (6 June 2009)

Is there a typically Asian way of telling a story and making a film? Even as Asian auteurs such as Ozu Yasujiro (1903 – 1963) and Satyajit Ray (1921 – 1992) took the lead from Western filmmakers, they also imaginatively recast some of their cinematic ideas into the social, cultural, and historical context that they live and work in.
This session will expose participants to Asian cinema with focus on national film histories and pan-Asian film genres. A brief summary of cinema in China, Japan and India will provide participants with a sense of Asian cinematic traditions. How has cinema become unique to each country through self-representation and documentation of a society in socio-cultural transition and economic and political development?
Films from Asia are also increasingly hybrids of cross-border and cross-cultural influence. This self-awareness of the Asian diaspora has brought about a sense of transnationalism. Participants will also look at how certain genres of films have taken on an Asian consciousness, for example martial arts and horror movies. The speaker will also discourse on how genres been enriched and complicated through ideas of gender, sexuality and class. The session will conclude with a look at a few key scenes in Asian cinema to examine the film styles and creative processes of Asian filmmakers.

Synopsis: Day Off, through its children, likes to think of itself as a bitter-sweet portrait of our time, as was in its own way, François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows forty years ago. From Tuesday night till Thursday morning, school pupils live the story of their lives, which is the story of our world. They go home to their ‘families’: traditional, broken up, single-parented, restructured – in a word, the families of today. It’s into this crazy, crazy, crazy world that the school administrator entrusts his flock. It comes as no surprise that it would have been better if he’d left the parents in the children’s care.

Held some two years before Woodstock, and attended by more than 200,000 hippies and freaks, the Monterey International Pop Festival in Monterey, California, in June 1967 was the world’s first major rock festival, and the event that effectively launched the Summer of Love. This essential record of a defining countercultural moment features sizzling performances from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding, as well as appearances by Canned Heat, The Mamas and the Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Electric Flag, The Grateful Dead, Simon and Garfunkle, The Who, and Ravi Shankar, among others. Not to mention Scott MacKenzie, singing the Summer of Love’s unofficial theme song: San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair) .

This landmark documentary chronicles the tragically ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. Only four months earlier, Woodstock defined the Love Generation; now it lay in ruins on a desolate racetrack six miles outside San Francisco. Before an estimated crowd of 300,000 people, the Stones headlined a free concert featuring Tina Turner, The Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and others. Members of outlaw biker gang The Hell’s Angels were asked to help maintain order. Instead, an atmosphere of fear and dread arose, leading ultimately to the death of a fan. What began as a flower-power love-in had degenerated into a near riot; confused faces wondering how the Love Generation could, in one swift, cold-blooded slash, became a generation of disillusionment and disappointment.
December 6, 1969: the day the Sixties died.

Dir: Peter Whitehead
20min | Digital-Beta | Rating to be advised
Peter Whitehead’s links with 1960s rock and pop glitterati are the stuff of legend. His filmed records of The Rolling Stones were pioneering and still seem artful, experimental, totally unique. This is pop and rock music viewed as filmic event. In glorious full colour or sombre monochrome, the revolutionary vibes of an era are conjured up.

Wonderwall
Dir: Joe Massot
1968 | UK | 85min | 35mm | Rating to be advised
A plot less fantasy about an eccentric academic (played by Jack MacGowran) loses himself in hallucinations and eccentric daydreams when he begins spying, via a peephole, on the prodigious sex life of next-door neighbour Penny Lane (played by the gorgeous Jane Birkin). The film is awash in swirling oranges, golds and reds, and it features a shimmering, sitar-laced score by Beatle George Harrison. A gloriously meaningless headtripping madness. Wonderwall is a surreal journey back to the Age of Altered Consciousness.
