POSTPONED TO 2010!! Singapore Reggae Festival ‘One Love’ (17 Oct 2009) POSTPONED TO 28 Nov 2009

POSTPONED TO 2010!! (Update: No idea if its true that this is gg to be in 2010, let’s hope they really manage to get it on for 2010!!)

Announcement:

Dear Fans / Friends;

This is a letter we never envisioned writing, but we’ve had to make the
unfortunate decision to postpone The Singapore Reggae Festival which was
due to be held on November 28, 2009 .

The Ferehemo Pte. Ltd has been promoting this show since September, and
while the momentum has been steadily growing, we can’t risk our
reputation by producing a show that doesn’t meet your expectations. We
did attempt to come up with an alternative date but the bureaucracy
involved made it practically impossible at such short notice.

We would like to apologize again for the postponement, especially to those of you who have already made ticket purchases, travel and accommodation plans. Unfortunately, there were circumstances which were beyond our control but we intend to make next year’s reggae concert even more spectacular so I hope you can join us then.

However, if you prefer to receive a refund, please contact SISTIC for the refund details.

Thank you all for your support.

God Bless.

Reggae
Reggae is Jamaica’s largest cultural export, and since its humble beginnings from the ghettos of Kingston, reggae has grown to become a worldwide cultural and musical expression. There are reggae bands from every habitable continent of the world, and as with music from the Jamaican source, reggae is a vehicle to teach, uplift, and inspire. The music that came from the ghettos has been the most powerful voice of the downpressed, music that carries the cry from Trenchtown (the Kingston neighborhood so named for the open sewer trench) to the heavens—if you want to hear the heartbeat of The People, listen to Reggae music! Since the early days in Jamaica, and through to the present day worldwide.

Defending the Caveman (25 Sep-10 Oct 2009)

Dear friends,SRT staged Defending the Caveman in March this year. The run completely sold out within days with very minimal marketing. This was due to (a) incredibly good word-of-mouth and (b) the fact that this show was the longest running solo comedy in Broadway history. We are staging it again in September, so if you missed it, please get your tickets right away. It is the perfect way to unwind after a hard day’s work. 90 minutes of pure laughter tackling the differences between men and women.

In addition, if you present your ticket stub at Harry’s@The Pier Robertson, you will receive a complimentary Harry’s Premium Lager on the day of the show. And for the month of September only, in view of it being Healthy Lifestyle Month, every pair of tickets purchased online will entitle you to a pair of complimentary one week Bikram Original Hot Yoga passes at True Yoga.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better deal than that, so please book now. I look forward to seeing you at Defending the Caveman!

The Whispering Lands

By Nan Jombang Dance Company

“Nature blossoms as a guide…” – Eri Mefri

The low-lying coastal plains of Western Sumatra and its hinterland of swamps and volcanic peaks make up their hometown of Padang, Indonesia, where the matriarchal culture of the Minangkabau is both bane and comfort to its community.

These lands whisper stories of the villagers’ hopes and dreams, their desire for a better life and the strong bond they have with their families despite their very resentment of the relationships within.

This dance in two parts traces the travels and travails of a migrant community of Padang.

Part One explores the underlying tension that plagues villagers in a small Minangkabau village, namely the desire to leave the matriarchal community to seek their fortune in foreign lands. Part Two presents the experiences of those who have already left their hometown, yet still feel an inexorable pull towards the culture that they left behind.

Choreographer Ery Mefri’s dancers accompany their performance with their own minimalist vocal percussions and weave contemporary movements with typical folkloric motifs of the Minangkabau, most notably, “plate dance” and the pants-slapping rhythms of randai.

Simfoni Filem Nusantara
by Orkestra Melayu Singapura
Singapore/Indonesia

Orkestra Melayu Singapura takes a journey through time in a performance of popular and iconic songs from Singaporean, Malaysian and Indonesian movies and television dramas from 1950s to present day.

Joining them onstage are pop diva Rossa and Sinetron star Intan Nuraini from Indonesia along with our local stars Taufik Batisah, Elfee R Ismail, Fuad Rahman and Hariani Hassan Bakri with their rendition of favourite songs such as Ibu and Ayat Ayat Cinta.

With a combination of shadow play and multimedia projections of old movies as well as more recent ones acting as a backdrop, the singers and musicians recreate a nostalgic world of music and movies. The line between time past and present seem to blur as the melodies of the night fuse themselves into yet another storyline onstage, even with their own cast of characters.

Songs are performed in Malay and Bahasa Indonesia

Observing the Berlin Philharmonic during a rehearsal of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) in 2003 by Sir Simon Rattle, documented in the award-winning film “Rhythm Is It ! “, Xavier Le Roy was fascinated and inspired by the functions of the conductor’s gestures, movements, and decided to venture into a laborious process of studying a conductor’s interpretation as it were to be a choreography of its own.

He created a piece in which a range of the conductor’s actions are painstakingly recreated on a bare stage, to a recorded soundtrack. The audience, seated in a surround-sound environment, in turn becomes a instrument-less orchestra. And hearing as a result becomes part of an embodied, inevitably visceral experience of movement and sound.

Choreographer Xavier Le Roy defies categorisation as a dance-maker, drawing on diverse influences from the worlds of science, performance art and contemporary dance.

A Singapore Halloween Double Bill
Vampire Monologues by Gary Ow
The Patient by Dennis Chew

Halloween in Singapore will never be the same again! ACTION Theatre proudly presents first-of-its-kind Halloween theatre – Singapore style! Hilarious, haunting and spine-chilling, SHOCKS & SHIOK! is a double bill of two original plays about Asian ghosts, Ang Moh Vampires and Singaporeans who happen to cross their paths!

Featuring VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES by web developer Gary Ow and THE PATIENT by radio DJ Dennis Chew of Aunty Lucy fame, SHOCKS & SHIOK! is directed by Life! Theatre Award winner Samantha Scott-Blackhall and produced by ACTION Theatre’s artistic director Ekachai Uekrongtham. Starring Chermaine Ang (Everything But The Brain), Crispian Chan (The Importance Of Being Earnest, Claude Girardi (Manhood) and Elizabeth Tan (Mama’s Wedding).

VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES

A finalist and a big hit with the audience at Theatre Idols 2009, VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES tells a riotous tale about Bob, a Singapore bartender who willingly lets himself be turned into a vampire in the hope of becoming a top comedian! With the help of Victor, a charismatic but very cunning Vampire, Bob learns to master his newly acquired “vampiric” powers, relish in them and eventually discovers how much he’s willing to give up to get laughs from his audiences!

THE PATIENT

Inspired by a true story, THE PATIENT is a riveting and chilling play about an aged Singapore man and a rookie Shanghainese nurse. From his hospital bed, the grouchy old man claims that vicious ghosts are after his life. Whenever there’s blood in his urine, they appear. Is he lying to get the attention from the nurse, the only living soul left in this world who still bothers to listen to what he has to say? Or is he suffering for real? Praised for its well drawn characters and adept social commentary, this finalist from Theatre Idols 2009 is a Halloween must-see!

“[María Pagés’] very personal and daring style and her elegant and expressive movements [are] free almost to the point of anarchy” – El Pais

“Cherkaoui is called a choreographer, but he’s really our conscience” –thisislondon.co.uk

Be the first in the world to witness two of the world’s most celebrated dancemakers, María Pagés and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, coming together in an extraordinary collaboration to create a dialogue between flamenco and contemporary dance. Inspired by the undulating landscape of sand dunes, a splendid vastness with a myriad tales to tell, this remarkable work of harmonic and rhythmic expression is set to ignite the soul and spirit.

Set against an original music score, coloured with echoes of flamenco, classical and Arabic music, this new creation draws from the relationship between Spain and Morocco. These formidable artists enter each other’s realms with respect and curiosity, motivating each other to examine their deepest connections to their own dance roots, yet equally driven by similar desires to understand and unify human difference. The meeting of hearts and minds become wonderfully clear as Pagés and Cherkaoui perform together in Dunas. Her legendary mastery of flamenco and his striking, eclectic style make this a creation of exceptional brilliance.

THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE LOVE STORY
gets turned on its head in
true W!LD RICE style!

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a merchant called Big Boss Bong and his three daughters: Brandy, Desiree and his youngest, Beauty.

One day, Big Boss Bong steals a rose from a garden as a gift for Beauty. He’s caught red-handed by a fearsome creature called the Beast who agrees to spare his life in exchange for one of his daughters.

And thus Beauty begins her adventures at the Beast’s mansion, where she encounters the fussy nanny Ah Ma Chow Chow, the excitable cook Baba Pongteh, and the sarcastic maid, Vacula Contessa.

Will Beauty ever escape from the mansion? Why does the Beast get tongue-tied in front of Beauty? And who is this mysterious exorcist called Master Kong Tao who has vowed to purge the mansion of its ‘unnatural’ elements?

From the same team that brought you last year’s runaway hit Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, BEAUTY & THE BEAST is a spellbinding musical comedy, filled with laugh-out-loud jokes, fabulous song and dance routines, stunning costumes and sets… and singing utensils.

Bring along your family, friends, colleagues and loved ones this holiday season and share with them this love story for all ages and all time.

A Fantasy on Ice

REVERIE takes place in the mystical world of ‘Albedo’, that special place created in the dancing reflection of light on ice. The Kingdom is ruled by ‘Samhain’ the King of Darkness and ‘Girasole’ the Queen of Light. The King and Queen are locked in an eternal battle for control of the seasons, fighting for the allegiance of their daughter the Princess Aurora. Aurora is the spirit of the Northern Lights who must leave childhood behind each year to find her Prince and take to the skies, ending the reign of Winter with the advent of Spring. If the King wins the battle to keep Aurora from her destiny, the earth will lie frozen forever in his dark and icy embrace.

Samhein devises an evil plan to imprison Aurora. He sends his knight Mabon to drag Aurora deeper into her dreams, wooing her with sparkling gifts of wonder in the velvet cloak of night. Aurora’s childhood playmate Imbolic, the shy and clumsy spirit of Dawn’s First Light tries to find the courage to express his love for the beautiful Princess and save her from the King’s clutches. But will Imbolic’s charm and simple gifts of warmth and light be any match against the spell cast over Aurora’s heart by the dark and dangerous Mabon? The Earth awaits her decision.
