MOGWAI returns to Singapore, for a one-night-only concert in at Esplanade Concert Hall on Friday, 23 January 2009.
On an Asian tour to support their latest album, “The Hawk is Howling”, the band returns to it’s roots, working with producer Andy Miller for the first time in a decade and delivering its first set of completely instrumental songs in several albums’ time. It has also sparked a cavalcade of interest in the band with the terms “classic” and “epic” being bandied around pretty liberal abandon.Their breathtaking balancing act of fragile beauty and occasional overwhelming sonic terror has developed quite a devoted following here in Singapore.
Live, though, is where Mogwai are really at and if past shows are anything to judge by, you won’t want to miss Mogwai.

Imprimatura – Solos (6-7, 12-13 Feb 2009)
The Substation Performance Lab Presents :
Imprimatura – Solos
- Dates: 6 & 7, 12 & 13 February
- Times: 8pm
- Venue: The Substation Theatre
- Admission: by donation
In 2004, The Substation presented a well-received series of monologues written by Verena Tay, called “3 Men Meet 3 Women”. They led to further editions of intimate, chamber-style monologue presentations by young theatre practitioners in 2006 and 2007. For any performer and writer, presenting a solo work is both a challenge and an opportunity: it’s a chance to explore material close to one’s heart, yet it is also a risk as the performer is laid bare onstage, without the aid of cast members and special stage effects. The project will also include a new solo performance by one of the alumni, Jocelyn Chua.
The Unpressionist by Bani Haykal
6 & 7 February, 8pm
The Unpressionist is a composer thinking up his greatest work for his late father’s birthday. In context, is his head. The Unpressionist absurdly experiments musical compositions through thought experiments, continuously giving form to a song that has no clear indication to where it’s headed. The piece questions choice, and the significance of choices as an entity of insignificance.
Love Song for an Island by Jocelyn Chua
12 & 13 February, 8pm : Please note that this performance is only for people 16 years and above due to the mature content and strong language used.
“Have you ever gotten into one of those really intense relationships where you love someone to death one moment and then feel like blowing their head off the next? I think I know how it feels.” Love Song for an Island grapples with issues of self-identity through a montage-style narrative of autobiographical stories, dance movement choreography, voice-over text and satirical renditions that seek to uncover the ambiguities behind our human perceptions.
Love Song for an Island by Jocelyn Chua (longer description)
“Have you ever gotten into one of those really intense relationships where you love someone to death one moment and then feel like blowing their head off the next? I think I know how it feels.” Love Song for an Island grapples with issues of self-identity through an intensely wrought montage-style narrative of autobiographical stories, dance movement choreography, voice-over text and satirical renditions that seek to uncover the ambiguities behind our human perceptions.
As a performer who also writes for the stage, I constantly ask, “How can one fully articulate spoken text in performance?” What dramatic vocabulary can I employ to convey a more keenly felt performance onstage? In Love Song for an Island, I employ sequences from a dance piece ‘WHIPLASH’ as a movement score to further express the textual narrative of my performance – my body is seen at times to cooperate with the play’s spoken text and at others, to struggle against its own expression. (WHIPLASH was developed under Ecnad Education’s recent student showcase entitled ‘Part Time Day Dreaming’ held at the Telok Ayer Performing Arts Centre in December 2008. WHIPLASH explores the idea of tension, release and suspension by attempting to push the performer’s body to its physical expressive limits. The featured self-choreographed movements were originally improvised along the concept of gravity, falling and the surprise element in solo performance, thus resulting in the medical title of the piece: Whiplash is a condition that occurs when the soft tissue in the spine – often the neck – is stretched and strained after the body is thrown into a sudden, forceful jerk.) Exploring the demands of a solo performance, I employ autobiographical stories together with voice-over text and movement choreography to maximise all storytelling possibilities on hand.
Finally, in the aftermath of my return from studying overseas in the UK, I found myself feeling a sense of loss as to where I stand in a rapidly advancing Singapore. I get asense that we’rebusy forging ahead both economically and culturally but where are we headed? Are we changing much faster than we can actually manage to sustain these changes? Love Song for an Island is, in part, a response tothe raging ambivalence I often experience as a citizen living under the fast-paced social atmosphere of Singapore.

The Year’s Wackiest Play
“What the Butler Saw doesn’t disappoint.
Here at last are the two hours of nonstop laughter
that theatergoers have been pursuing all season.”
The New York Times
Considered the late British satirist Joe Orton’s finest play, What The Butler Saw is an award-winning comedy that knits together dysfunctional family relationships, laws of attraction, notions of sanity, identity and authority in an exceedingly comic fashion. A classic comedy that is a must-see for all!
Set in the uncertain independent years, What the Butler Saw is adapted to reflect Singapore’s economically turbulent times. The backdrop of our familiar colonial past is juxtaposed with dizzying pop fashion, sights and sounds reminiscent of The Beatles.
The play is set in a psychiatric clinic and mayhem begins when Dr Ang tries to seduce Geraldine. They are interrupted by the sudden entrance of Mrs Ang who is on the run from roguish Nicholas. The madness ensues when Dr and Mrs Ang try desperately to weave lies in to hide their seedy truths. Coincidentally, an obnoxious Dr Rance appears to try to make things right, only to make them inconceivably wrong! Throw in a bungling Sergeant Ma, incessantly slamming doors and a hair-raising gun-fight — that’s recipe for good old-fashioned comedic disaster and an uncanny family reunion!
Zany director Loretta Chen (The Vagina Monologues & 251) together with her award-winning collaborators emblazon this British farce with familiar Singaporean charm. Cultural Medallion recipient Iskandar Ismail ignites the music score with ‘60s swing, President’s Design Award-winner Sebastian Chun spearheads production design while retro-inspired costumes and lights are crafted by Life! Theatre Award-winners Laichan and Yo Shao Ann. With this stellar team of established creators, acclaimed thespians and a celebrated radio personality to boot, What the Butler Saw is one crazy night out you don’t want to miss!
Starring Gerald Chew, Vernetta Lopez, Elizabeth Tan,
Shane Mardjuki, Vadi PVSS, and Timothy Nga.
Produced by Zebra Crossing Productions.

Sat & Sun, 02:00PM & 08:00PM
Approx 1 hr 30 mins

S$35
Thai with English surtitles
Dear Death is an innovative presentation of classic and modern performing arts through dance, music and drama. Graceful, unique and with music adapted from classical Thai, its inspiration harks back to a story based on Thai culture and influenced by the Buddhist philosophy and concept of death.
Though the Buddhist concept which regards death as a truth of nature is comprehensible, the source of suffering cannot be easily eradicated. Loss of a beloved causes grief. The performance portrays an ordinary man striving for enlightenment, but suffers loss on his pathway. He then starts to look at death with another perspective, as something beautiful and magnificent. He imagines Death as a kind-hearted God who relieves those who suffer from pain and illnesses. He sees Death as a god riding on a heavenly chariot to transport one’s beloved to eternal happiness.
Dear Death sets a new direction for modern performing arts in Thailand, and follows after the run of ‘Dancing to Nirvana’ in Prague and Esplanade last year.
The Pianist (15 Feb, 10pm, okto)
Sunday 22 Feb, 10pm (okto)
The Pianist is based from the autobiography of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a
Polish Jew who detailed his survival during World War II. A celebrated
composer and pianist, he played the last live music heard over Polish
radio airwaves before Nazi artillery hit. During the brutal
occupation, he eluded deportation and remained in the devastated
Warsaw Ghetto. There, he struggled to stay alive even when cast away
from those he loved. He would eventually claim his artistic gifts, and
confront his fears, with aid from the unlikeliest source – a German
officer who helped him hide in the final days of the war.
Away From Her (15 Feb 2009, 10pm, okto)
Sunday 15 Feb, 10pm (okto)
Married for almost 50 years, Grant’s and Fiona’s commitment to each
other appears unwavering. Their daily life is filled with tenderness
and humor; yet this serenity is broken by Fiona’s increasingly evident
memory loss – and her restrained references to past betrayal. For a
while, the couple is able to casually dismiss these unwelcome changes.
But when neither Fiona nor her husband can deny any longer that she is
being consumed by Alzheimer’s disease, the couple is forced to
wrenchingly redefine the limits of their love and loyalty – and face
the complex, inevitable transition from lovers to strangers.

Though a man of many names, Robert Fernando remains a man of one true great talent. He is the real deal. The genuine article! Like the international vocal luminaries he’s frequently compared to, Robert is blessed with a rich, velvety smooth voice that effortlessly scales the heady heights of romantic fervour to the abyss of emotional intensity.
One of Singapore’s most respected and sought-after vocalists, Robert Fernando’s voice is about emotional depth and romance.
Truly a soul with soul, in both his vocal complexities and personality, Come Celebrate, his passion for life and its beauty that surrounds it. As his soul reaches out to touch you through songs of great crooners, it will certainly be A Night To Remember!

Hi Robert,
Here’s wishing you a Happy Birthday in advance. My apologies for not being able to make it that day. I spotted the flyer of your show by chance when I attended a meeting at the NAC last Friday.
I was also wondering if you are keen and available to perform at our 3rd Anniversary Art of Healing Celebrations on 27 February 2009. The show begins at 1pm to 2pm. You can then join us for a bit of a bite at the reception. In this program that we have, we stage performances for our patients, caregivers and staff to try and help ease some of their anxieties. Not sure if you are keen/ available but a token fee can be arranged.
My mobile number is 97628998 if you can call asap.
Thanks very much and God Bless!

THE ODD COUPLE (Female Version) by Neil Simon (25-28 Feb 2009)

THE STAGE CLUB PRESENTS THE HILARIOUS FEMALE VERSION OF NEIL SIMON’S CLASSIC COMEDY
THE ODD COUPLE.
Some plays age horribly fast, some endure the test of time. Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple (Female Version) is definitely in the latter category. It is timeless because it deals with issues we all understand and experience on a daily basis. The original Odd Couple spawned a hit movie and a television series and ultimately this sexually-inverted stage spin-off to great critical acclaim.
The play is set around the tense but hilarious live-in relationship between Olive, the unapologetic, messy slob, and Florence her neurotic, domestic, perfectionist friend. Add in the weekly gathering of their game-playing friends and the chaotic English of a couple of charming Spanish brothers, for whom Olive has the hots, and the stage is set for a night of unforgettable entertainment.
Neil Simon is, unquestionably, America’s greatest comic playwright not simply because he knows how to write a gag, but because he understands how funny human beings can be. With an experienced cast headed by Mini Elliot (Black Comedy, Little Women) as Olive and Nicola Perry (Rumours, Hedda Gabler, Arcadia) as Florence and directed by Nick Perry (Black Comedy, Out of Order, Rumours, Alarms and Excursions and Arcadia), you won’t laugh more this year.

Theirs is a distinctive mix of metal-tinged alternative rock and killer pop melodies – welcome the late night with West Grand Boulevard.
West Grand Boulevard formed in February 2005 when founding members Erik, Dharma, and Jon (former WGB drummer) were looking to make music without boundaries. No genre fixations, no scenester intentions, just freedom to make whatever music they wanted, drawing from a vast array of musical influences and experiences ranging from classical music to metal and pop punk. Jude and Bryan quickly followed on bass and vocal duties, and Syed came onboard to take over percussion in 2006, becoming a steadfast part of the West Grand family.
With the removal of limitations constantly in the forefront of West Grand Boulevard’s creative songwriting process, they have grown into a band without fear. West Grand Boulevard is bulldozing their way through crowds and critics alike with a furious determination to write honest music, and winning a loyal following in the process.
The Screwtape Letters (27-28 Feb 2009)

27-28 Feb 2009
Fri & Sat, 03:00PM & 08:00PM
Approx 2 hrs 15 mins
INTERVAL
Approx 15 mins
Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel
S$29
The Parables Company is proud to present, for the first time in Singapore, a new stage adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ classic satire The Screwtape Letters. At turns philosophical, mercurial and witty, the book following a senior demon’s searing correspondence with a greenhorn tempter on assignment here on earth has now become a play that will shift some long-held paradigms on what we think is “evil”.
It is London, 1938, and the personal life of trainee demon Wormwood’s human “Patient” is beginning to mirror world events. As order and sanity begin to crumble under the growing threat of a second Great War, Wormwood tries to flex his untested tempting abilities to lead his Patient unsuspectingly down a path towards Eternal Damnation. But this is not without his vastly more experienced and merciless Uncle Screwtape, Senior Undersecretary of the Department of Tempter Training, critiquing his every move.
C.S. Lewis, author also of the much-loved Chronicles of Narnia series, dedicated The Screwtape Letters, with its dark sense of inverse morality, to his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, and declared he never wrote anything ‘with less enjoyment’. However, these diabolical epistles proved to be an instant hit and remain a bestseller to this day. As we track Wormwood and Screwtape’s surprising stratagems alongside the choices faced by their Patient, the play promises to be an revealing study of evil in all its varying shades, and the fight we may, or may not, choose to put up against it.
Praise for C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters:
‘Sparkling yet truly reverent, in fact a perfect joy’
– Guardian
‘Excellent, hard-hitting, challenging, provoking’
- Observer
The Parables Company is a theatre company driven by Christian values and a mission to tell stories, for all, that answer as many questions as they ask. More information to be found at www.theparablescompany.com
