Director: Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane Satrapi
Cast (Voice): Chiara Mastroianni, Catherine Deneuve, Danielle Darrieux, Gabrielle Lopes

Girls and boys had to use different doors to enter the school. She had to cover herself with a long dark robe. Grownups around her began to disappear. Marjane has several close encounters with the country’s morality police and her teachers at school. Iraqi bombs fall on the street where she lives. Eventually her parents send her abroad to receive a European education, but she is miserable: she loves her family and country, despite their flaws, too much to stay away for long. After a brief return and a failed marriage, Marjane leaves Iran for good.

This is a heartbreaking true story of a childhood coinciding with regime change and war in Iran. It’s a story that everyone who counts themselves as a human being should read or watch.

The Festival opens with The Dancing Sky, aerial performances by Studio Festi. Known for staging large scale and visually spectacular performances, audiences can expect a visual spectacle at the first weekend.

Making use of the expansive landscape, the sky is literally the limit as Studio Festi pulls out all the stops  with soaring dancers, helium-balloon ‘planets’ and flying ships  and pianos.

Queen of the Tides

2 big transparent spheres, 6 metres of diameter, rolling around their own axis, go ahead very slowly in front of the Museum; a girl dances, suspended within the sphere.

Like the Moon

The moon floats between and flying dancers, graceful against the night sky of the Museum frontage.

Flying Piano

uspended in the air, light as melody, is the piano and the pianist as a lone performer  dances atop the grand instrument.

The Progeny of Dreams

Daughters of the night, tall (3 metres above ground), mysterious  and magnificent in their multi-colored costumes and mask, will loom over passers-by as they parade down Stamford Road.

The Harmony of the Spheres

Big flying spheres are lifted and with them, dancers take to the sky! They are brought higher and higher  and the performance heightens as the spheres leap over and interact with the crowd.

In the Waters of the Sky

A big flying vessel with a female acrobat performs an extraordinary dance in mid-air.

Also available at SMU Green are and amazing Light Show, a Water screen & projection, an outdoor theatre Tablo Vivant, and two dances that will take your breath away with contrasting elements, the Water Dance and the Fire Dance.

Deliciously Local, 6.30pm-2am

Looking at recreating the carnival atmosphere of the Pasar Malam, the Deliciously Local features a variety food stalls and games kiosks located on the National Museum of Singapore’s Stamford Green. As the name implies, eat, shop and play at the variety of stalls offering everything from local street food, to one-of-a-kind buys to long lost games of old like tikam-tikam.

Unconference, 6.30-8pm

Some would say the best parts of an arts conference are the breaks, not necessarily the formal programme, when people can chat and network. The Substations goes straight to the fun bit as they continue their Unconference series that started during the Singapore Art Show 2007. Using the speed-dating format, participants have four minutes to have a one-on-one chat about the topic of the night – Why are so many ex-lawyers in the arts?

Admission to the Unconference is free by registration, which can be done via email, to admin@substation.org

Baby, Where Are All The Fine Things Your Promised Me?, 7-11pm

An interactive installation-cum-street performance by New Zealander Stephen Bain. Visitors will see a quaint model of an old school quarter-acre house at first, but will be amazed to discover a man living ship-in-a-bottle style within the tiny 1.5m by 1.5m house. Chat with the actor as he plays music and cooks within his home. If you’re lucky you might even get to share a cup of tea with him!

Four Mics – Jazz (25 July), 7.30-9.30pm

Unwind to the groovy beats of Four Mics – Jazz, a line up of stellar jazz performances at the Singapore Art Museum. Performances include a sulty Latin jazz set, an upbeat pop jazz  set and a melancholic blues jazz set.

Celebration, 7.30-8pm

The Happy Puppetry Company has devoted itself to the preservation of traditional Chinese puppetry culture and is famous for its exquisite  puppets and dramatic shows. Directed by leading Taiwanese female puppeteer, Ms Sih-mei Chiang, with her son Chia-tsai Ko and grandsons Shih-hong Ko and Shih-hua Ko, The Happy Puppetry Company will present a show entitled Celebration, backed by an ensemble of traditional musicians.

The Flight of the Night Owl (25 July), 8pm-12.30am

Under the Flight of the Night Owl programme, there are 2 specially planned activities for the public to participate.

The first are museum tours titled Memories and Secrets. Conducted in English and Mandarin at hourly intervals at the respective museums, guides in period costumes will walk participants through the buildings and share stories about the architecture, history, restoration and secrets of each museum in a fun and interactive way.

The second is a treasure hunt titled Heritage Quest-Treasures of Singapura that will begin at the National Museum. Set against the historical story of the Javanese Majapahit Empire’s conquest of Singapore, participating teams will ‘play’ soldiers on a mission to recover the hidden treasures of the fleeing Sultan Iskandar Shah. Teams will race to the five museums and various places in the arts and heritage district to solve puzzles and overcome challenges. There will be prizes for the top 3 teams.

Memories and Secrets is free for students, NSF and senior citizens; other members of the public can take part at a nominal fee of S$2 per person. Heritage Quest-Treasures of Singapura is available at S$5 for students and NSF, S$10 for other participants. Registration is required for both activities. For more information, visit www.nightowl.sg or call +65 6324 8740.

Hairspray (25 July) & Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (26 July), 8-9.45pm

The National Museum’s open air  cinema initiative Under the Banyan Tree will be screening 2 classics – the original 1971 film adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl story, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the 2007 remake  of the Broadway classic, Hairspray.

Reform, 8.30pm, 10.30pm, 11.30pm and 12.30am

Perth-based arts group PVI Collective hits the Night Festival with Reform, an outdoor performance work that behaves itself… to the extreme. Armed with an overzealous enthusiasm for current  legislation, laws and social standards, PVI’s comic taskforce attempts to implement their own brand of patriotic conformity at the Night Festival.

The audience, turning in via portable FM radios and headsets, can join in their antics as they applaud good behaviour or offer  neighbourly advice to any ‘wayward citizens’ at the festival grounds. Registration is required  half an hour before each performance.

Update: Catch Reform on July 25-26, from 8.30pm, at the National Museum Stamford Green. Registration is required half an hour before each performance.’

Bloco Singapore (25 July), 9.45-10.30pm

Bloco Singapura, as the name implies, is a bloco-style street percussion act made up of 100 members selected from various schools, organisations and percussion groups. Led by the Rei Momo (the ceremonial king of the parade), a procession of high-flying performers dance to a pulsating chorus of afro-inspired beats from their bateria percussion ensemble. The percussion and band performance  will culminate at the stage on Singapore Management University Campus Green where they will present a  world-music inspired set of five songs sung in Yoruba, Portuguese and English.

26 July

A 20-member percussionn ensemble  will perform a fresh fusion of street percussion with urban hip hop and club grooves.

Light Installation by The Electric Canvas, 9.45pm-2am

A Sydney-based  lighting effects company The Electric Canvas specialises  in large-scale projections on historic buildings. Especially for the Night Festival, they will be transforming the facades of  the National Museum and the Singapore Art Museum into elaborate works of art. The installation will extend to 27 July to 3 August, 7.30-11pm.

Music ~ Spore Heritage Fest: Sound Stories 1: Heroes in Concert (26 July 2008)

26 Jul 2008
Sat, 07:30PM

Zouk

S$15 (until 25 July), At the door on event day – S$18

Ladies and Gentlemen, put on your dancing shoes because the National Heritage Board is bringing the 60s, 70s and 80s back!

It’s the Singapore HeritageFest once again and one of the exciting programmes lined up this year is the concert Sound Stories 1. In line with the festival’s heroes theme, the much anticipated one-night only concert at Zouk will showcase local music legends from the past who will be coming together after many years such as Gypsy, The Trailers and STARDUST. The reunion will be the first in 30 years for STARDUST, whose members Robert Fernando, Clement Chow, Ann Hussein and Pat Chan, will be performing. This concert will also feature veteran singer Rahimah Rahim, and contemporary bands such as Jive Talkin’ (who also performed at the 2007 Sound Stories concert).

Besides the veterans jazzing the night up, upcoming local youth band, The UnXpected, will also be adding a contemporary feel to the concert. Hosted by radio personality and DJ Brian Richmond, Sound Stories 1 will be a perfect mix of the old and the new.

Gypsy’s Mel Ferdinand promises the audience a “great time” at Sound Stories 1. He says that Gypsy is a firm believer of giving joy to people and thinks that platforms like Sound Stories are good ways of reintroducing these bands to Singaporeans who may not remember them.

The UnXpected really wants you to expect the unexpected so for now, all Shirlyn Tan (singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist) can say about the band’s upcoming performance is, “We’re all really excited and definitely going to rock it out.”

All in all, Sound Stories 1 will not only be a time to reminisce for the older generation but will also give the younger generation a first-hand opportunity to listen to these music icons who may have been their parents’ heroes – live.

So, who’s your local music hero? Start your journey of introspection this Singapore HeritageFest!

http://amp.channelv.com/amp/resources/_user/214/wJNyJR.png

A Vacant Affair (AVA) was formed in the aftermath of Cheap Thrills, at a crucial point in the latter’s existence. Then in the July of 2004, the founding members of the group, Matt and Shen, decided to evolve the band beyond its laid back jamming days and bring its ambition to greater heights. Sacrifice and much uncertainty encompassed this grueling ambition. Beginnings are moments of loss.

Formerly known as Pug Jelly, they have released an album on Universal, torn up stages in Thailand, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, played along side teen idols such as Avril Lavigne, Blondie, Simple Plan, Sum 41 and more, they were nominated for the MTV Asia Awards 2005, their first single “Come Home Soon” went to No.1 on radio in Singapore, Now their back with a brand new EP.

4pm – 445pm: The Fire Fight

The Fire Fight emanated from independent songwriter Joshua Tan (Vox/Guitars). Harmonising his impassioned melodies with the modest innovative tunes of Jonathan Leong (Guitars), the intricate tapestry of Chris Ong (Synth/Triggers) and the dynamic-compelling rhythm of Iain Tham (Drums) and JBarks (Bass), The Fire Fight has conceived a truly pristine experience for the music of today. Identifying inspirations from the diverse likes of The Promise Ring, Maritime, The Velvet Teen, Death Cab for Cutie, Jamiroquai and more, The Fire Fight resonates an 80s “raw” indie mood with hints of modern expression.

5pm-545pm: Bluejade

Get rocking with BlueJade. Churning out numbers by U2, My Chemical Romance, Muse, REM, Coldplay, Greenday and more, this live act is endowed with a great vocalist.

6pm-645pm: Zero Sequence

Since its inception in 1998, Zero Sequence has been a beloved progressive-rock band well-known for their spontaneous showmanship and technical proficiency. Not one to conform to the norm, the act performs epic tunes, inspired by classic rock giants and classical composers.

The Zero Sequence experience is an unforgettable one. Their live sets are always a bravado-filled opera, complete with duelling keyboard solos, high octane guitar pyrotechnics and soaring vocal harmonies that take flight and arrest the listener. For anyone who has reservations about their searing talent and passion, their highly charged and air-tight performances will eventually take away all breaths of doubt. With no order or warning, Zero Sequence will conquer you.

From the very first day that this band was formed (in the year 2000), they were destined to be something more than the ordinary. Forced to be independent due to the lack of support coming from major record companies, Urbandub released their debut album called BIRTH. Off of this album, the hit tracks “Come”, “Give” and “Would You Go” launched and took their world by storm. ..INFLUENCE (Lighter Records), Urbandub took on a new form, changing their sound with a new drummer (From Jed Honrado to Jerros Dolino).  The track “Soul Searching” later won the award as Song of the Year in the NU107 Rock Awards 2003. Pushing the sound further, the collection bagged the Album Of The Year Award in the NU107 Rock Awards 2004.

Today, Urbandub now offers yet a third helping of what they are capable of. With the 2005 release of the album EMBRACE. Urbandub is Gabby Alipe (Vocalist / Guitarist), Lalay Lim (Bassist), John Mendoza (Drummer) and John Dinopol (Lead Guitarist).

8pm-845pm: CC Sound Factory

Causing a stir in the contemporary electronica scene, CC actually started as a vocalist with a couple of New York indie rock bands that performed in the vibrant downtown Manhattan arts scene. Quite by chance she landed herself a deejay gig and found herself deejaying for the next year or so at exclusive parties and afterhours, a couple of New York clubs and numerous fashion and art gallery events. With a command of dance dynamics, coupled with her vivacious personality, CC has been known to create intense dance atmospheres that keep crowds RAVING on for hours!..first track, “So Shiok”, which has been described as being “STRIKING in its complexity” as well as “bizarre and unique” (Broadjam Review). This track will be featured in the upcoming French-American feature Soleil Noir (Dark Sun), a dark, haunting yet vibrantly colorful futuristic thriller. CC has been described as a cross between experimental Icelandic singer Bjork and trendsetting electronica genius Moby

9pm-10pm: Transient Vortex

We’re Sugu (a.k.a Sugs) and Samlaleo Singh..The battle plan for us is to keep on producing good electronica. Raw, edgy, melodic and serene … with breaks….Right now breaking out of Malaysia is a great deal for us.  We’re pretty focussed on that and somehow we feel that would be the only way to ensure Transient Vortex’s survival in the electronic music industry. (From an interview here.)

10pm-11pm: Adrian Wee (Dj)

http://www.think.cz/issue3/03/adrian2.gif

2pm-245pm: Firebrands

http://web-iac.nokia-asia.com/uploads/artist/FIREBRANDS7_1197258250.jpg Firebrands is a band based in Singapore, unique for their furious blend of heavy rock, funk, and turntable SFX. Beginning as a voice that revolted against the dominant social and political monotone, Firebrands burst out as a search for truth and freedom in an authoritarian South East Asian republic. Their music has been described to embody a sense of restless urgency that makes them stand out even more in their context. Their debut album, First The Flash Then The Pulse, was an outstanding success, filling the international airwaves with their music. They have performed across the globe, from Taiwan to Dubai, and from Australia to the US, alongside acts like Tommy Lee, Jet, and Puddle of Mudd.

Firebrands are:
eXe: vocals (Singapore)
Roman: guitars (Moscow, Russia)
ghost: bass (Singapore)
Jachin: drums (Louisiana, USA)
doctormix: turntables & SFX (Singapore)

3pm-345pm: Fishtank

In 2001 – Fishtank spoke their very first words. 2001’s Souvenir Novelties & Party Tricks hurtled towards jaded, unsuspecting music fans at warp speed. Fishtank’ unique punk-ska sensibility was fresh, immediate, weird and exquisite – a cacophony of melodic intricacy tempered by a quirky, childlike enthusiasm. It became the little album that could – and would – turn local indie-rock on its head. Fishtank had arrived. … sophomore Make Nice.. A bigger, bolder production aesthetic took everything up a notch.. Fishtank’s infectious, fast frantic style is still at the core, and tireless…a Muse-like guitar riff intro, “I want out” pairs a Biffy Clyro rhythm with The Fratellis singalong shout out choruses. Elsewhere the band toys with tweaked-out reggae rhythms (“One Shot”); frantic, arpeggiated thunderous anthems (“Conversations”); and, taking cues from the vibe of the new line-up – sweeping, fuzztoned epics (“Yahoo! Superstar”). Finally, “Young & Old”, “Candlelight” and “Walkaway” are the songs that didn’t fit in then are now reworked into exhilarating, rollicking, rock-solid songs we’ve all come to desire from Fishtank.

4pm: Giants Must Fall

With influences ranging from indie to hardcore to eletronica and disco, Giants Must Fall is a new line-up, a new sound and a new purpose that drives the songs. Distinctive vocals, extremely rhythmic riffs and a powerful message prove that Giants Must Fall isn’t any other ordinary band.Started in the aftermath of the reshuffling of elonmoreh (who under the pseudo of magdalene, entered the semis of the inaugural Straits Times band competition “school of rock) due to the drummers jungle activites, Giants Must Fall was formed after the addition of Jon Leong (not of singapore idol fame). After a little reshuffle of the band members, Kelvin Took over Jon Leong. (WE STILL LOVE YOU JON!)

5pm: West Grand Boulevard

West Grand Boulevard formed in February 2005 when founding members Erik, Dharma, and Jon (former WGB drummer) were looking to make music without boundaries. No genre fixations, no scenester intentions, just freedom to make whatever music they wanted, drawing from a vast array of musical influences and experiences ranging from classical music to metal and pop punk. Jude and Bryan quickly followed on bass and vocal duties, and Syed came onboard to take over percussion in 2006, becoming a steadfast part of the West Grand family. With the removal of limitations constantly in the forefront of West Grand Boulevard’s creative songwriting process, they have grown into a band without fear. West Grand Boulevard is bulldozing their way through crowds and critics alike with a furious determination to write honest music, and winning a loyal following in the process.

6pm: Flybar

Formed in 2006, Flybar are about to release their debut album “ Scream Without Raising Your Voice”, filled with ultra-catchy, Beatles-esque tunes and incorporatin hints of many other music elements not usually associated with rock music: harmonica, electronic beats, saxophone solos and much more. Amongst the many accolades the band has received, Flybar, consisting of Ian Toh (vocals), Deon (drums), Yado (Bass), Ben (rhythm guitars) and Jon Ong (lead guitars), won the World Battle of the Bands within 3 months of its conception, representing Singapore in Hong Kong in the World Battle of the Bands International Finals 2006 which was transmitted ‘Live’ internationally via QQ.com and also supported by Channel V. They have shared the stage with Asia rock giants Rivermaya and internationally acclaimed act Jet at Fort Canning Park.

7pm: Vertical Rush

VERTICAL RUSH do not adhere to your typical indie-band recipe. Take a good serving of gutsy guitar rock, blend it with intricate song arrangements, a large helping of catchy pop hooks and a pinch of tongue-in-cheek humour. Serve fresh with an intense live performance. Satisfaction guaranteed! Vertical Rush have come a long way from their inception in 1998. Though they have experienced 10 years of lineup and stylistic changes, Vertical Rush remains true to their core passion: To make music that moves people. Vertical Rush draw from a deep well of musical influences, ranging from classic to alternative rock, and it shows in their music. In a generation of bland imitators who scratch the surface, Vertical Rush are a much-needed voice of passion and maturity.

8pm: Allura

Allura was conceived in early 2007 from an unusual series of unfortunate events. Allura is a five-piece band infusing a different variety of influences, from Jazz to Alternative, from Experimental to Indie – portrayed in the form of Rock. With emotive passion and resilience, Allura pristinely resonates a unique quirky melodic tone with a prerogative crunch. Feel and embrace a new emotively refreshing sound, oozing into your senses.

9pm: Plain Sunset

http://www.timeoutsingapore.com/contentFiles/image/2008/March/Music/plainsunsetreg.jpg

On May 26 2008, local indie-pop-punk legends Plainsunset will release “PLAINSUNSET”, their first widely distributed studio album. PLAINSUNSET is the band’s self-titled fourth release, since reforming after their breakup in 2004. For the members of Plainsunset, – Jonathan Chan (vocals and guitars), Norsham Husaini (guitars and backing vocals), Nizam Sukri (bass) and Ronny Laily (drums) all age 33, this much anticipated fourth release documents Plainsunset’s best and most consistent music to date, and is also their most adventurous, mature, and accessible studio release. This album certainly charts the 12-year-old band’s steady progression to maturity and popularity. From their early days, playing to as little as 30 kids at local community centres, to touring Malaysia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and New Zealand, Plainsunset have had quite an impressive, if convoluted, history. After breaking up in 2004, they set the record for the greatest attendance in a single set at the Esplanade’s Baybeats Festival (Singapore’s biggest Indie-Alternative rock festival) with their spectacular comeback performance in 2006. Most recently, Plainsunset have made a stride into the world of commercial music, with 5 tracks from their upcoming album featured in Star World’s HEROES Season 2 promotional campaign aired earlier this year.

10pm: Coconut Showhand
11pm: Simon Subsonic (Dj Set)

Simon Subsonic is resident dj at: Club NME – at Koko, London. DJing in the main room, to 1800 people. Filling the dancefloor with all the latest releases, rarities and a few surprises that you would expect from the flagship club night of the indie taste bible. Dear Midas, I really hope you guys won’t do something like this too last minute-or at all. I know alot of ppl, especially younger ones, are saving up their money for the tickets for just a chosen one day. It would be a real bummer if the bands are changed and they can’t exchange their tix (of this I’m not sure) or get refunds. We love that you’re bringing in better and bigger acts this year (Thank You for Mraz!) but please be kind. Thanks again )

Gary (21:29:27) :

the line up for this year is far worst than last year if you notice,

maybe it’s just me, but there aren’t many bands or groups here worth the money we’re paying,

for me, i see the ones worth are:

jason mraz
lost prophets,
NFG,
and panic at the disco.

simple plan is pure shit so nothing much to go woooo haaa about.

24 06 2008

blucat (09:38:23) :

Hey Gary

Honestly I’m going only for Jason Mraz and Alicia Keys )They’re enough for the day.

Though I did look through the forum at the Singfest site and alot of people seem quite happy with the lineup. Different strokes eh?

1 07 2008

hudds (16:53:48) :

hye. is there any possibility that the price will drop cause I’ve read last year singfest, the tickets will go cheap towards the day. it’s too pricey lah. and i would love to come just for mraz!

1 07 2008

blucat (17:46:42) :

Hey there hudds )

I have no idea if the prices will drop cos I’m not the organiser heh. But yes, I read the forum too and that the ticket prices dropped alot last year nearer to the show. I also read that some people are planning to wait till the last few days or week to buy the tickets this yr, just in case they do become much cheaper.

H/w this yr is Mraz and Keys, I’m the anxious sort so I’m terrified the tix might be sold out if I wait till the last minute :/

I havent decided when exactly to get the tix, but I hope you get them! So cool to see Mraz live! Good Luck and see you there!

1 07 2008

blucat (17:49:18) :

PS hudds:

The reason for the tix dropping so low last yr cos not many ppl were buying them. But I think there will be a whole load of more people coming this year – last time Mraz came here, his show was sold out!- so if alot of ppl snap up the tix early, its possible they might keep to the current price (

1 07 2008

hudds (20:00:38) :

hurm.. i was thinking the same thing too. it’s Mraz, man! everyone’s dying to get the tix. but seriously, i need to get my piggy bank and crash em to collect more cash because i’m a student and i’m from Malaysia. which means, to get the bloody tix..i need almost 500bux in ringgit malaysia! gahhh!!! thats a lot. *sobs*

lets pray for the price of ticket to drop. ahahha.

2 07 2008

blucat (17:58:13) :

hudds: oh no! dont break the piggy! well i really really hope the price drops about a week before the fest cos i think the price is really too high for the fans of the acts coming, most of you guys are still students.. what a bummer. pray!

btw make sure u buy them from sistic and not at the venue cos they’re more ex at the door k!

2 07 2008

hudds (19:39:55) :

okay2. ey, u havent bought the tix yet eh?

3 07 2008

blucat (11:05:55) :

nope, but the earliest i would buy them is mid july, latest end july.

working ppl also got financial constraints :p

but i think right, prolly i get them mid july cos i’m really scared i cant get tix haha!

3 07 2008

Mandarin and Malay with English surtitles

Four friends sip coffee and exchange tales. One of them brushes her arched, feathered wings, while another steadily contemplates the instrument in his hands. The other two debate incessantly about human rights and wrongs and the appraisal system they try so hard to uphold.

Suddenly, the winged musician rises and declares he is taking the initiative to blow his horn, which will usher in the Day of Judgment. While the pair of moral auditors bicker, their client sinks deeper into a coma.

They share more tales and drink more coffee…the perfect recipe for a good get-together, or even Armageddon.

After their successful collaboration on Trick or Threat in 2007, directors Kok Heng Leun (Drift, A Stranger At Home) and Aidli ‘Alin’ Mosbit (Ma’ma Yong-About Nothing Much To Do, Impenjarament) expand on their engaging intercultural dialogue with a work that asks questions about faith, conscience and the afterlife—in a variety of languages.

Angel-ism presents a rare pairing of two of the most exciting Malay-language and Chinese-language theatre companies in Singapore today.

“I felt a powerful sense of something live and organic being created, something that was unpredictable and, therefore, exhilarating, almost dangerous… aiming to illustrate the complexity and insolubility…of the race situation in Singapore.” The Flying Inkpot, on ‘Trick or Threat’

Swordfish attack Singapura, terrorising its citizens. A boy saves the kingdom by lining the beach with banana stems. But the Sultan, at his ministers’ advice, has the boy executed.

A generation later, the Sultan’s successor, his son, breaks the covenant between subject and ruler when he has his concubine publicly executed on trumped-up charges, bringing untold shame to her family. Sure enough, an armada of ships from the Majapahit empire soon appears on the horizon, and threatens Singapura’s supremacy.

Acclaimed Malaysian playwright Kee Thuan Chye’s (1984 Here and Now, We Could **** You Mr Birch) first play in more than a decade is a bitingly comic satire that blends ancient myth with contemporary politics. Directed by Ivan Heng (Animal Farm, Happy Endings: Asian Boys Vol 3), and accompanied with live orchestration by Gamelan Asmaradana, this theatrical epic promises to be a dazzling exploration of the senselessness of war, religious conservatism and hypocrisy, and the ruinous abuse of power.

“Kee writes from the heart; his works consistently emphasise fair play and equality. They question the state of being of both the individual and the society he lives in.” The Star

“Playwrights such as Kee are rare in this country…because at a time when others shrugged their shoulders and walked away, he stepped forward and spoke aloud his thoughts, and theirs too.” The Sunday Mail

The Swordfish, then the Concubine was shortlisted from 600 entries for reading at the 21st International Playwriting Competition at the Warehouse Theatre, UK, in 2006.

Where do your memories live?

Tree/House is a two-part performance about how we remember in a city of forgetting. First a tree, then a house, provide the starting points for a exercise in modern storytelling, which weaves objects, images and anecdotes together into a provocative and poignant remembrance of things present.

In Tree Duet, spell#7’s Paul Rae and Kaylene Tan explore our continuing entanglement with trees by presenting a theatrical meditation on the things they make us think and do. Tree Duet is an eco-performance minus the moralizing, which reinvents tree-lore for the 21st century.

In House of Memory, visual artist and film-maker Ho Tzu Nyen presents a PowerPoint lecture with a difference. Beginning with the destruction of his childhood home, Tzu Nyen plunders the history of twentieth century cinema in search of his memories – with increasingly explosive results.

The Press on Tree Duet:

“This is a show that eludes you, that charms you but does not seduce you, that stirs you and awakens you to a new level of consciousness while never quite binding you in the same spell, that speaks softly and is radical without being radical at all.” Flying Inkpot

“An honest performance, a realization of the dangers posed by our passivity to the decay around us, and a serenade to life itself.” Art Jam

Both parts were first presented as works in progress by The Substation in SeptFest 2007. Tree Duet was nominated for the Life! Best Original Script Award 2008.

1826. Sir Stamford Raffles lies on his deathbed, delirious with dreams and hallucinations, whilst his wife Sophia frantically records his biography. A giant Rafflesia blossom invades his bedroom; he meets his deceased first wife Olivia, and encounters a talking statue who bears prophecies of greatness.

As his life flashes before him, we witness his birth at sea, his early voyages, his triumphant founding of Singapore, and his eventual tragic downfall—with his children dead of tropical diseases, his research destroyed in a burning ship, and himself bankrupted and diagnosed with syphilis.

The Last Temptation of Stamford Raffles is written by multi-talented playwright and poet Ng Yi-Sheng, whose last play, 251, based on the life of Annabel Chong, played to packed houses. Directed by Christina Sergeant (Furthest North, Deepest South, The Hypochondriac), this is an unforgettable journey into the mind of a legend. Was Raffles a wily schemer or an enlightened reformer? What kind of legacy did he leave behind on an island he called the ‘child of my own’?

“251 is worth seeing not only for its success at putting Chong’s dubious “achievements” in perspective as performance art, but also for pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable subject matter for a Singapore stage production.” TODAY

The Last Temptation of Stamford Raffles was a finalist at ACTION Theatre’s ‘Theatre Idols’ festival in 2007.

It is the year 2058. Singapore is reeling from a mysterious rain of fire. Buildings have been flattened; scores of people have been killed. In fact, nearly everything in this once pristine and technologically advanced city-state has been destroyed.

A day after the disaster, Major General Abdul Aziz has seized the reins of power in a non-effeminate military coup. A colony of intrepid survivors, led by activist Jessie Soon and spiritual leader Simon Sitoh, have pooled their resources to rebuild Singapore.

Sifting through the wasteland are news anchorman David Fong and reporter Lisa Wang, determined to cover the rebirth of the nation in unreal time. Can Singapore reclaim the future from the wreckage of her uncertain past? We bring you their minute-by-hour report-LIVE!

With ear to the ground and tongue in cheek, this debut full-length play by Ken Kwek, a former journalist with the Straits Times political desk, is an exhilarating peek into a terrifying future. Directed by Samantha Scott-Blackhall (The Physicists, Everything But The Brain), Apocalypse: LIVE! asks if it is possible to extract sound bites from an incomprehensible nightmare.

Music ~ Envy – ‘Compiled Fragments’ (9 Aug 2008)

9 Aug 2008 Sat, 7:30PM

Esplanade Concert Hall

Standard – S$88, S$78, S$58, S$48, S$38

In the past 12 years, Envy has become a dominant band in the Japanese independent hard-core scene. Their music, through their own evolution, encompasses a sound where intensity and beauty coexists. Aiming for a style of their own, Envy’s music is none other than original to say the least. Envy is characterized by their ability to master screamo’s loud-soft dynamic to evoke both crushing brutality and gentle beauty, often within the same song. Thus their live shows have grown in legend over the years. The band is also noted for their deep and poetic lyrics.

Stuart from Mogwai, a British rock group from Glasgow, Scotland, described it as “An amazing live band with qualities of both a raging tornado and the calmness after a storm”.

Envy has been asked to support many artists from overseas on tour in Japan such as ISIS, Converge & Locust and has toured around the world on their own. They have gained great support touring in America and Europe after releasing split singles EP with American and European bands such as Sixpence, Endeavor & This Machine Kills.

Following the release of “A Dead Sinking Story” in 2003, they signed with Rock Action Records and have since released 3 albums with them. Envy was the opening act for Mogwai’s Japan tour in 2004 and was invited to play at the All Tomorrow’s Festival the following year before touring UK. They have played at festivals in France and Taiwan, and in 2006 played at Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.

This one night only Singapore gig marks the band’s first ever performance in South-East-Asia and promises to be a spectacular evening at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 9 August 2008 at 7.30 p.m.

Music ~ Death Cab For Cutie (12 Aug 2008)

Tue, 07:30PM

Esplanade Concert Hall

Standard – S$148, S$128, S$108, S$88, S$68
Box Seat – S$148

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE performs in SINGAPORE for the very first time as part of a worldwide tour in support of their groundbreaking new album Narrow Stairs, which debuted at #1 on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.

When asked to describe their sixth studio album, Narrow Stairs, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Chris Walla characterizes it as “having teeth”. While many bands in Death Cab For Cutie’s situation would try to recreate the success of hit songs like “Soul Meets Body” or “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”, Death Cab has instead crafted the most ambitious and varied album of their career by simply doing what they’ve been doing since they formed in Bellingham, Washington a decade ago – made a brilliant record that refuses to pander, while stretching the artistic boundaries of what a Death Cab For Cutie record should sound like.

After spending much of 2006 in the midst of a turbulent tour cycle surrounding their RIAA platinum, Grammy-nominated album Plans, the band took a well-deserved break during the first part of 2007. Frontman Ben Gibbard embarked on his first-ever solo tour; Chris Walla released a solo album and produced records for acts like Tegan And Sara; drummer Jason McGerr constructed his own recording studio, Two Sticks; and bassist Nick Harmer, as always seems to be the case, worked on various projects. If Plans was a collection of firsts – Death Cab’s first album for a major label; the first disc to feature songwriting contributions from someone other than Gibbard; the first Death Cab disc recorded with the same drummer as the one before – Narrow Stairs feels more like home.

Death Cab for Cutie’s rise to Grammy-nominated rock quartet is one of indie rock’s greatest success stories. This one night only Singapore gig marks the band’s first ever performance in South-East-Asia and promises to be a spectacular evening – Don’t miss it!

Based on the Pulitzer-prize winning novel by Harper Lee, Sharon Ang presents “To Kill A Mockingbird”, a literary classic that tells the story of Scout Finch, her brother Jem and their friend Dill, who become fascinated with their very reclusive neighbour “Boo”. Imaginings run wild as the children make up their own reasons on why “Boo” remains hidden, and conceive ways of drawing him out of his house. Over the next two summers, the children find small gifts being left in a tree outside the Radley house. Although they know that it is the mysterious Boo making affectionate gestures towards them, their curiosity is never satisfied as he never appears in person.

As this goes on, a more serious matter has surfaced as the children’s father has agreed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping a young white woman. His decision leads to serious repercussions against himself and his children by members of the community. Furthermore, the father of the victim – Bob Ewell, vows revenge against not only the accused, but also against his family and those who defend him. It then becomes apparent that the issue ceases to be about the violation of a woman’s innocence, but the racial prejudices of a community and the dark side of human nature. In directing this play, Christopher Jacobs decides to focus on the psychological dynamics of confrontation between human beings. As such, the play is not set in a specific locale or to any historical period, but will present a generic communal society, which the audience can identify with on a visceral level.

As Aya experiments with rhythms with Budi on Repinique (Brazilian snare drum), and Boon Gee on drum set, Riduan will trigger his handheld Brazilian percussion instruments, especially his Pandeiro (very close to tambourine but with more sizzles and depth in sound), with his electro gadgets.

Whilst Aya embraces all the beats and pushes the edge with her analogue synthesizers and gadgets, Yuta Nakayama will improvise his innovative home-made gadgets that stole the show — with Aya at the Choppa Festival held at LASALLE College of the Arts.
It’s a mad new JUNGLE, it’s a wonderful mayhem that will exist for one night only. “

Princes come from afar to seek her hand in marriage, but she demands that they answer three riddles before they can claim her as a bride; if they cannot answer them, they will be beheaded. So far, all have failed and perished, until an exiled prince appears and takes up this challenge, leading to a battle of wits that stirs up a maelstrom of passion, transformation and self-sacrifice.
