Funktion: The Ultimate Retro Dance Party (6 Sep 2008)

Set in the lush surrounds of Fort Gate (Fort Canning Park), expect over 3000 revellers when the gates open at 6pm, exploding with a fanfare of entertainment from veteran spin doctors who have devastated famous locales back in their heyday. It’s a night to boogie shamelessly to retro hits with cheesy hand moves and equally tacky dancing. Think tight bell bottoms with outrageous mismatch prints, complete with big retro sunnies and you’re on your way to vie for the Best Retro Dressed! But the fun does not stop here; Party-goers will also be encouraged to color code themselves ala ‘Traffic Light’ to signify their eligibility for the night:

Wear Red if Unavailable. “Just there for a good time”

Wear Amber if Undecided. “Try your luck.”

Wear Green if Uninhibited. “Game for some fun.”

Have you been waiting for that 80’s or 90’s song to dance to?

For every ticket purchased, you’re entitled to send in 2 retro song requests and we’ll put it on the playlist! Stay on till the end of Funktion for the ‘must have’ slow dance.

Admission age: 18 years old and above. Photo ID may be requested to be produced at the door for admission. Get ya tix here!

pretzels (12:24:10) :

Funktion was quite a disappointment though. i would have assumed that the organiser would have done something if they are expectin rain and not just have tents up. if they had wanted people to dance, have planks on the middle ground as well (useful when it stopped raining-bet they hadn’t thought of that!).. it was bloody muddy all over the place and not much fun (

and one of the djs was crap! if he had wanted to say stuff, do it before the music starts and keep ure lips sealed and not interject wt your stupid i-replace-the-original-lyrics-with-my-own-words crap! it just spoils the whole experience. i didnt pay to hear u say your stupid made up lyrics! and not to say the flow from one song to the other was lagged.and for heaven’s sake, if you want to play rock and roll, u jolly well play the original singer who did the rock and roll and not Britney!

-_-

wow that sucks!! yeah i was wondering how it went because of the rain (didnt go, being a good girl during fasting month). so i’m guessing there was plenty of muddy shoes around. gah!

dj sounds like he wants a mic for his own -_- and some music history lessons.

hope they learn from this and do it better next time around eh.

DBS Arts Centre – Home of SRT S$25

SRT’s The Young Co. presents the retelling of William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost – a tale of The King of Navarre who has invited his three male companions to swear a very public oath to study together and to renounce women for three years. It is love at first sight for all concerned despite the highly entertaining but hopeless efforts to disguise their feelings. The Young Co. is a two-year educational platform for 17 to 25 year-olds, and Singapore Repertory Theatre’s (SRT) investment in future stage talent. It is Asia’s premiere part-time dedicated programme for young people attached to a repertory theatre. Twenty young people are selected from open auditions to form the core of the company and receive practical training in all aspects of theatre. Be sure not to miss this enchanting production by Singapore’s young talent this September.

The Studios 2008: Pollen Revolution – Akira Kasai (12-13 Sep 2008)

12-13 Sep 2008 Fri-Sat, 08:00PM Esplanade Theatre Studio S$28

Akira Kasai is one of the most highly-acclaimed performers of butoh who has incorporated Western elements in his development of the form. He has been described as the “Nijinsky of Butoh,” “part marcel Marceau, part Mick Jagger” (Dance magazine) and described as an “angel descended to earth.” Pollen Revolution is a daring solo performance that takes the audience on an almost surreal journey through time, cultures and states of being. Akira begins the performance wearing the full costume of a young maiden from one of the most well-known kabuki works, Kyokanoko Musume Dojoji. He appears to perform a traditional Japanese dance but is completely improvising. Gradually, the costume flies away, madness sets in and Akira is transformed into a street dancer, a solitary actor, a contemporary traveller. Here, on the outer boundaries of un-self consciousness, change is the only constant as butoh meets and morphs into hip-hop. Akira studied modern dance and classical ballet but completely changed course in 1963 when he started studying and performing with the founders of butoh – Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata – as well as performing many of his own solos throughout Japan. He stopped dancing in 1979 and left for Stuttgart, Germany to study the principles of eurythmy. When he returned to Japan in 1985, he began his creation of a highly individual and new style of butoh which he debuted in 1994 with the work, Seraphita.

One of America’s most endearing and enduring performers of all time, Tony Orlando is celebrating the 35th anniversary of his recording of “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree” with a long-awaited, world tour concert in Singapore on 16 September! Like a painter, Tony is an artist who steps onto a stage as if it were a blank canvas. Each show he weaves colorful emotions set to music touching the deepest part of a person’s heart. No entertainer can move and excite an audience like Tony Orlando. Orlando, born and raised in New York City, began hitting the national charts at the age of 16 with Halfway to Paradise and Bless You as the first vocal artist to sign with Epic Records. What further followed under a band collaboration of “Tony Orlando and Dawn” was a meteoric rise to the top with chart topper Candida, as well as Knock Three Times which not only became number one, but also took its reign as the top song of 1971, selling over six million copies worldwide. The immense popularity of the song is still evident today. Tony’s recording of the song was featured in the hit movie Now and Then. Amazingly enough, Tony hadn’t even begun to scratch the surface of his stardom. In 1973, he recorded Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree. The song was number one for the year, became Orlando’s theme song and grew into an American anthem of hope and homecoming, reunion and renewal. An evergreen international sensation, Tony has been a recipient of three American Music Awards and a People’s Choice Award. For his outstanding achievements to the entertainment industry, Tony was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990. Tony brings an energetic and exhilarating performance that entertains audiences of all ages. From a million records sold (five number one hits), and a popular television variety series, movies and Broadway – Barnum and Smokey Joe’s Cafe – Tony Orlando has mastered every facet of show business. Be prepared for an entertaining night with the American Icon as Tony Orlando rewinds times with golden melodies such as Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree, Candida, Knock Three Times, Sweet Gypsy Rose, He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You), Steppin’ Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight) and Mornin’ Beautiful at his first ever concert in Singapore!

The Studios 2008: Book from Hell – Zai Kuning, Dickson Dee, Otomo Yoshihide (17-18 Sep 2008)

http://www.sistic.com.sg/stix/images/internetcontent/hell0908/images/Book%20From%20Hell%20pic.jpg

17-18 Sep 2008 Wed-Thur, 08:00PM Esplanade Theatre Studio S$28

Supernatural lore is part of many Asian cultures. In these cultures, the belief that spirits, ghosts and demons are periodically released from the underworld to roam the earth has inspired the creation of works of dance, literature, costume, art, food, alcohol, music and sound as offerings to appease the spirits during their time on earth. Inspired by this belief and its practices, Book From Hell is a music collaboration by three renowned Asian composers and musicians – Zai Kuning, Dickson Dee and Otomo Yoshihide – each of whom brings his own cultural and personal understanding of this belief to this composition which combines electronic and acoustic music with vocals and video work. The three collaborators are known for their own distinctive yet always evolving styles of music, and have worked extensively in their own countries and internationally. Zai’s styles range from extreme noise, ritual chants and electronic to acoustic compositions. Dickson has worked with industrial noise, experimental electronic, avant-garde, cut ‘n’ paste and new classical. Otomo has journeyed through rock, jazz, free jazz, free improvisation, avant-garde, minimalist electronic, turntablism, film soundtrack and more. Together, they present a fascinating exploration of the co-existence of the human and spirit worlds.

When Stanley Clarke, Grammy-winning bassist, composer and Rolling Stone’s first “Jazzman of the Year”, began his musical career in NYC in the 70s, he blew audiences away with his inventiveness and dexterity on the acoustic and electric bass, and showed the world that the bass could be a melodic front piece. He has since helped shape the music of the decades with his melding of electro-funk, hard rock and jazz with Return to Forever partners Chick Corea, Al Di Meola and Lenny White, on collaborations with greats like George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty and Al Di Meola, and for film soundtracks such as Boyz N the Hood’s. Multi Grammy®-winning bassist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Marcus Miller, has had a six-album-stint with Miles Davis, produced hit records for Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Wayne Shorter and Al Jarreau, provided killer bass lines to discs by Donald Fagen, the Brecker Brothers, Grover Washington, Jr, David Sanborn, Paul Simon and more, and recorded eight solo albums, including the Grammy-winning M2, making him the only solo bassist to have ever won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Victor Wooten is considered by many to be the world’s greatest electric bassist. Some 20 years ago, he and his brother Roy joined Howard Levy and Bela Fleck in the wildly innovative, triple-Grammy-winning band, the Flecktones. While with the Flecktones, Victor launched his remarkable solo album debut, A Show of Hands, even as he played for several fusion and progressive supergroups and artists such as Branford Marsalis, Dave Matthews, Bruce Hornsby, Prince, Bill Evans, Susan Tedeschi and India.Arie.

27 09 2008

Nicholas (01:37:38) :

Having just returned from the above-mentioned Diana Krall concert that was staged at Fort Canning Park on 26 Sept, I am compelled to give an honest first hand review of the event.

I will describe the event in the following succinct terms:

- severe lack of parking space

- low comfort – red and white plastic coffeeshop seating (I thought I was at a ge-tai performance)

- poor acoustics – 2 miserable speakers beside the main stage

- F1 engines roaring in the distance

- Poor lighting and irregular pathways

- lack of toilet facilities

- lack of proper signages

In general I felt bamboozled, swindled, taken for a ride.

This is not to say that Diana Krall is a poor performer: she is just as talented and gracious as all tout her to be. Unfortunately, the organisers failed her, and us – the ticket-holders. The decision to switch venues, from Marina at Keppel Bay to Fort Canning Park, was disastrous and foolish. My suspicions that KBO Asia was out to maximise profit and minimise cost was reinforced throughout the evening.

Ticket-holders were given red or white plastic coffeeshop seats to sit on, the white ones for those who paid $250 and above and the red ones for the rest. Ugly. Uncomfortable. Dirty.

From the moment we sat down, a loud droning noise drowned out the filler music playing from the speakers – it was the F1 cars on their trial run. It did not stop until well into the performance and it began anew towards the end. Couldn’t hear Diana Krall even with a hearing aid. This could have been resolved if the volume was turned up or if more speakers were installed around the seating area. Only 2 could be seen and heard from beside the main stage. KBO Asia might as well have turned off Diana’s microphone.

As the night grew darker, the pathways and slopes became less visible. Some people almost tripped getting to their seats. There were no light sources other than the main building and the stage.

A row of chemical toilets used at construction sites lined the pathway into Fort Canning Park. We couldn’t find a toilet accessible in the main building, except for a handicap one which had a hole in the door and lacked a water supply or toilet paper. I guess the organisers thought that the grass would suffice.

The numbering system for the seats was amateurish and unprofessional. Print-outs were merely stuck onto the white and red plastic coffeeshop seats. My ticket number was 402 C 16. There were C 15 and C 17, but no C 16: it was missing, I kid you not. What kind of a scam is KBO Asia running here?

Besides not being able to hear the performance and to see the stage (we were packed so closely together), the start of the performance was delayed for at least 30 minutes. Apparently the organisers decided to wait for the F1 trials to stop before sending Diana out. They gave up halfway as she began amidst the backdrop of F1 engines revving.

In the middle of the performance, I noticed that only about 60% of the seats were occupied. The lady in front of me was nodding off to sleep – she might have dreamed a better performance. I was disappointed. I could neither hear nor see Diana Krall perform. How was it better than watching her Live in Paris DVD in the comfort of my own home on a cushioned seat, in air-conditioned comfort, with surround sound through 5 speakers, and a cold beverage in hand, with no mosquitoes and blocking heads in front of me? And I was one of the lucky ones who paid only $125.00 for my ticket. I shudder to think what I would be driven to do if I had paid more for it. In any case, $125.00 would have bought me 4 Live in Paris DVDs.

We sincerely hope Diana Krall returns to Singapore again, despite KBO Asia.

Finally, a simple analogy would describe how I feel at this present moment.

Imagine a young boy or girl buying an ice-cream from an ice-cream seller. The ice-cream seller hand the child a cone, only problem is, he left it out on the counter and didn’t refrigerate it. Imagine the child buying the cone and unwrapping it, only to see it melt and fall away as he pulled off the wrapper.

I am utterly disappointed with KBO Asia and the way they handled the organisation of this event.

The credentials and expertise they list on their website would make them liable for misrepresentation.

27 09 2008

Nicholas (01:52:54) :

One final note on the failures of KBO Asia in organising the Diana Krall concert in Fort Canning Park.

The supposed reasons given on their website were negated on the ground. Despite the apparent centrality of the venue, parking space was severely limited and counted for nothing given the number of people who turned up. Even the VVIPs had no lots for their Rolls Royces.

In the process, acoustics and comfort were sacrificed.

Where is the transparency in the matter? Why was the venue changed? Who made the decision? Why were ticket-holders not consulted or compensated?

Why are there follow up performances listed on 27 and 29 Sept at Marina at Keppel Bay, the original venue?!? If the above-mentioned reasons – mainly centrality – were made for the performance on 26 Sept, shouldn’t it also hold true on 27 and 29 Sept? Where is the logic in the matter?

I hope KBO Asia will not be given another opportunity to disappoint fans of other artistes.

29 09 2008

Kineticworks (10:31:21) :

This the lame excuse given by the organizer.

“The DIANA KRALL concert has been changed to Fort Canning. This new venue has been chosen because of requests from ticket holders and also fans as it is more centralised or accessible by public transport and for private cars / parking.”

6 10 2008

Nish Nawalage (18:28:14) :

I share the pain expressed by Nicholas. I too attended Diana Krall’s concert which KBO Asia organized and it was the WORST I’ve ever been to. I paid S$395 for two tickets for my wife and myself.

So both of us dress up in our evening best and make our way to the event at Fort canning due to a last minute venue change by the organizers. That would raise eye brows, a Jazz recital in the middle of a green, interesting. That still it didn’t bother me too much till we reach the venue.

The afternoon of the same day was some heavy tropical downpour and I don’t need to tell much more than that, all the ladies with their very expensive stilettos were sinking into the soggy green uprooting sizable wads of grass and dirt. To the grate dismay of many including the both of us, we had to tread through wet grass into our so called front line seats which were unstable cheap plastic chairs! Really and I was the idiot who paid S$197 for each of these seats.

We reached the event slightly late but still there was no performance, and on inquiring from one of the ushers we were told that they have not started due to the Formula 1 noise and then I heard it, the noise of a million mosquitoes amplified and reflected at the green by the high rise buildings from the race track area. So after 1 hour of listening to the opening band (F1) we start the show. To the greatest annoyance and the displeasure shown by Diana herself who kept-up a brave face and played on for over an hour even with the overwhelming noise generated by the formula 1 cars.

I’m sure from what I have already read; I’m not alone when I say we were cheated off our hard earned money by the organizer KBO Asia. The ambience was totally ruined both by the change in venue and the noise pollution. A jazz recital is a very personal experience each one of us is wiling to pay good money to experience. Also we go well dressed to respect the event, the artists as well as fellow Krall fans. We do not expect to be given plastic chairs on a very wet green, exposed to the elements and the mosquitoes for the amount we paid.

I’m saddened, disappointed and feel cheated by the appalling lack care and planning by the event organizer KBO Asia. I for sure will not be supporting any events organized by them in future and would warn all my friends to stay clear of them in future.

Terence (22:57:29) :

After reading all the complaints, I am glad that I did not go for the concert myself. FOR those people who is reading this, please note that KBO Asia is a division of onelifestylegroup. This is previously on the KBO asia website. Now they have put a rather unfriendly note. They clearly are not keen to refund the money. Those who do not believe, please google kboasia n clicked on the cached. It does say that it is a division of onelifestylegroup, which also owned a few restaurants in Singapore and 3 more opening soon next year. This can be found at http://www.onelifestylegroup.com or http://www.one-concepts.com. Please kindly spread this to your friends as this is really an insult to the image of Singapore. It is only natural that people are unhappy with the event organizers, and yet they remained rather non-chalent about it. If that is the kind of service they are giving to the people, think about how they will treat their customers in the restaurant as well. Are we the consumers taken as a fool?

7 10 2008

Sebastian (00:19:33) :

Terrence, you are absolutely right. We should get this fella out of Singapore. I heard that the main organizer of this company, onelifestylegroup aka kboasia aka one-concepts is a

British man aka Adrian Hobbs. He is not a chief executive, he is the CEO of the company. Do something!!!

7 10 2008

Sebastian (00:21:13) :

by the way the 3 restaurants that is run by him is T-Bone, Unopuro and RiverOne.

8 10 2008

lee (22:36:38) :

I’ve been to Tbone and riverone before few times, I can say that the service are very good. The staff are very hospitable dealing with guest and the food is very nice steak and the lava cake. But unfortunately they are treated very badly by the Chief Executive Officer Mr Hobbs. They were treated like an animal. I saw it and hear clearly how he scold vulgarity on his staff and how the noise when he throw thing inside the restaurant glasses and kitchen stuff, ive seen this scenario when after using the tbone toilet. Im very shocked how he treated the staff, as they were very good to the guest. Ive spoken with an ex staff of Mr Hobbs, the staff told me that some of the previous staff already complain to the MOM and yet there is no action. Salary is pay installment basis, delay. Leave entitlement are poorly given, treatment is terrible, and most of the staff who leave the company never received there last salary, and given a life treath. I wish there are people who can help those poor staff to find a job which will be better for them.

if u look at some of the other links, it appears that the guy answering rudely with profanity and vulgarity is the same guy i.e. Adrian Hobbs. If he is such a big con man, why is he still allowed to set up shop here? It looks like he has been doing this sh** for some time and getting away with it. Cant CASE or MOM step in and bring this fella to justice or something?

I mean my god, the way he does business, treats his staff, answers people is appalling. And no one has been doing anything?

And 3 restaurants in Singapore? Definitely not going to his restaurants.

I think i saw 1 in Robertson Quay. Unopuno or something. Boycott!!!!

18 10 2008

Chinablack (00:00:41) :

Adrian Hobbs is a con man. I worked in his old restaurant many years back. He still owes me and my other colleagues our salary and CPF. He also cheated investors’ money claiming that business was poor (only open shop for less than 3 months). He also never pay the food suppliers then went hiding. A few of us reported to CAD, police (when some Datuk and his gang from Malaysia came to ask him to return the money he borrow from the Datuk) and CPF. We also hired a lawyer to write a letter of demand for us. Nothing was done.

He previously caused problems with Coco Lee, Mariah Carey, Jose Careras and even earlier Ning Baizura (Google them). And he always get away with it. I hope all of you all get your money back and that whoever is working for him now get paid and walk away from him immediately.

By the way, he registered his company’s website (KBOAsia) under the name Jaden Hobbs (http://sgforums.com/forums/8/topics/332833?page=1). Well, I suspect there is no such person. When working at the restuarant, he had even used a colleague’s name and signed to rent a car without her permission. By law that’s a crime. I think he settled the case with money so the girl didn’t take him to the police. I also discovered that on his driving license, his name is spelled as Adrain Hobbs (not Adrian) … and it’s an American License, not UK. He also had a photocopied liqueur license in his old restaurant instead of a real one (spotted by some customers who were lawyers). That one I never got to the bottom of it except knowing that one of the investor / director was a lawyer and ex-policeman. He quit the company before the restaurant was open. Suspicious? You bet.

When I was working for his restaurant, he had 6 or more companies, all linked to each other, a very complicated conspiracy. One of the company do “training” (whatever that is). He hired a professor from the States (or some ang-mo countries). The poor guy (as I got to know from a colleague) was not paid as agreed and he even had to pay for his hotel accommodation and plane ticket to and fro from his own pocket. The “student” were paying Adrian Hobbs like $200 to $300 for the “course”. They too were not refunded, OF COURSE! He knows the loopholes in Singapore law.

How does he look? Fat … really … reasonably tall … pretentious and rude under that fake smiling face. I hope more people are aware of him and justice can be done someday.

18 10 2008

Chinablack (00:37:28) :

We also report to MOM. Nothing done … I wonder how thick is the file now? Are these depts blind or what?

6 11 2008

lee (01:15:36) :

Jaden Hobbs is his son’s name. he introduced it to us when we had diner der.

Yeah,,, he uses his staff names to register to all the license,,,maybe he got people form MOM who back him up… he’s an as***le…

Director: Dany Boon Cast: Kad Merad, Dany Boon, Zoé Félix, Lorenzo Ausilia-Foret, Anne Marivin

Synopsis: Philippe Abrams is manager of the postal service in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. However, he cons a postal inspector to get the position he wants and gets caught in the act. As punishment, he is banished to Bergues, a town near Dunkirk in northern France, for two years – a cold and rainy, unsophisticated place, filled with yokels (called ch’tis, i.e. Northern French people) who speak a strange, barely understandable dialect (called “ch’ti” or “cheutimi” according to Southern French people). To Philippe’s surprise, Bergues is a charming place teaming with warm, friendly people and co-workers. He tries to describe the happy turn of events to his wife who has remained in the South with his child, but she absolutely refuses to believe him. This inspires Philippe to tell her what she wants to believe is true. Julie becomes so convinced by the impressions of his wretched life that she decides to join him in the North to relieve his gloom. Philippe is forced to confess to his new friends and colleagues that he has described them as barbarians to his wife. He begs them to behave as such to cover for his lies and to scare Julie so she will depart quickly. Philippe’s comrades throw themselves into the masquerade and give Julie the worst weekend of her life, with comic (and sexy) results. About the film The film has broken nearly every box office record in France: it debuted as the top movie with US$31.67 million at 793 sites. The film has grossed over US$180 million in France alone.

Checkmate – Albert Tiong (10 & 11 Oct 2008)

10-11 Oct 2008 Fri – Sat, 8:00PM Esplanade Theatre Studio S$30
The truths of relationships are hard to grasp, often masked by impassioned emotions. What if they are negotiated like the cold confrontation of a chess match, contemplates choreographer Albert Tiong in Checkmate. In his exposition of life’s endless battles, he imagines the clarity and immediacy of chess. Every match is a challenge – unforeseeable or anticipated. Take it in stride or ignore it. Yet every outcome is indisputable – a triumph or a defeat. Tiong pushes the limits of agility, integrating movement with the pulsations of breath and the malleability of space, in this gruelling and energetic work featuring dancers from Taiwan and Singapore. Trained at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Tiong was a dancer with Taiwan’s acclaimed Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and Singapore’s Odyssey Dance Theatre, as well as a guest artist at the Hong Kong Dance Company. In addition to furthering his career as a choreographer, he is also an educator, teaching dance in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Currently he is a resident choreographer/ rehearsal master of Frontier Danceland. Tiong created Checkmate as a special commission for da:ns 08 with a two-week residency at Esplanade

In Singapore, the orchestra will perform under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor, Leonard Slatkin, Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2008-2009. His many honours and awards include the prestigious 2003 National Medal of Arts and the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. One of the world’s top five orchestras and its renowned conductor present an evocative programme that moves from two tender, lilting, strings-dominated excerpts from Sir William Walton’s score for Sir Laurence Olivier’s film Henry V, to the four linked movements of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ dramatic, spirited Symphony No. 6 in E minor, and finally culminating in Edward Elgar’s famous, emotive “Enigma” Variations, each variation inspired by and dedicated to an individual, beginning with his wife, featuring his close friends, and ending with a self-portrait.

Esplanade presents Electrolab: Secret Mommy (23 Oct 2008)

23 Oct 2008

Thur, 08:00PM

Esplanade Recital Studio

S$28

Andy Dixon, aka Secret Mommy, has had an extensive yet modest musical history. From age 11 to 22 he bounced around from one punk band to the next, each one a bit more experimental. This eventually led him to experimental electronic and electro-acoustic music under the moniker Secret Mommy. His first two albums were a blend of 8-bit noise, and animal sounds; thick with cheeky top 40 sampling and drenched with cynicism and retort.

The albums which followed were more thematic and based around field recordings and self-imposed regiments. His passion for sound manipulation led him to a deeper exploration of organic sound. He began creating music strictly from one sound source, be it a field recording of a public swimming pool, or a recording of himself eating a pineapple.

His live performance is an accumulation of his robust history. It is mainly routed in his skill as a song-writer and guitar player, but also involves his love for sound manipulation and the act of revealing his process by slowly destroying a sample in real time. Fragments and loops from his catalogue are stacked together while guitar is played, sampled, and resampled. Dixon’s voice bonds everything together and reveals that his process has perhaps come full-circle: into the sphere of pop song-writing.

Esplanade Theatre Studio

Standard – S$25

“..And to stir the mind To search after what it fain would find, Things that seem to be hid in words obscure Do but the godly mind the more allure To study…”

These words by great Sufi master Farid ud-Din Attar may be found in his classic work of poetry, Conference of the Birds. Since its creation centuries ago, it has been translated to many languages, pored over by Muslim and non-Muslim scholars and academics alike, and in the 70s, was adapted into a play by Peter Brook and Jean-Claude Carrière.

Now, experience it in its adaptation into the Malay language and in the form of theatre by local dramatic company Teater Ekamatra.

Journey with us as the play depicts the passage of the human spirit in its quest for truth, through the pairing of elements of traditional Malay and regional theatre with those of contemporary theatre.

Be immersed in parallel stories – one of travelling birds and another of an old man and his grandchild; one, innocent and naïve, in search of the meaning of everything, the other, in need of reconciliation with ghosts of the past… both, stories of searching and the eventual discovery that the King they seek is non other than themselves.

Presented by Teater Ekamatra, a non-profit theatre company dedicated to developing and producing socially relevant plays that reflect the contemporary Singaporean vernacular.

Written by Isa Kamari, winner of the prestigious Southeast Asia Writer Award in 2006 and Cultural Medallion Recipient for Literature in 2007.

Directed by Sani Hussin, stage and television actor and director.

Performed in Malay with English surtitles.
