A huge hit with children, teens, adults and families alike for generations, audiences will now have the unique chance to see The Wizard of Oz come to Technicolor life on stage this October! Adapted direct from the MGM motion picture, with script developed by John Kane and the Royal Shakespeare Company, it promises hours of fun for all!

The story of Dorothy and her friends, and their struggle to find what they feel is missing in their lives will touch a chord for many people. As you watch, their journey through Oz reveals the true characters of Dorothy’s companions – Tin Woodman, the most tender and emotional; Scarecrow, the wisest, and Cowardly Lion, the bravest. However, Dorothy’s desire to escape from the hopeless monotony of Kansas brings her only trouble and leads her through many dangers, until she too realises that what she is seeking is only a heartbeat – or a click of the heels away. In this magical journey through Oz I Theatre seeks to address our insecurities and reaffirm the uniqueness and value of every individual.

Featuring unforgettable songs ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’, ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’, this will be a rare opportunity to experience this spell-binding musical live on stage! With such a huge classic brought to life in Singapore, there’s no need to look Over The Rainbow for a fabulous time of family fun!

“The Internet Is For Porn”, “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today”, “It Sucks to Be Me”…. These are just some of the hilarious songs that make Avenue Q unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Currently one of the hottest shows in the West End and on Broadway, Avenue Q is a fabulously furry and fun-filled romp featuring an ensemble of actors and some very adult-minded puppets. It’s ‘Sesame Street’ with a very grown up twist!

You’ll meet Princeton, a fresh-faced college grad, Brian the out-of-work comedian, Internet porn addict Trekkie Monster, Nick the good-hearted slacker, Rod, his investment banker roommate who seems to be hiding a secret, kindergarten teaching assistant Kate Monster, and of course, Lucy the Slut. They get away with things that only puppets can without being arrested.

Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to make it in New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account.

Presented by Singapore Repertory Theatre, the company that brought you Ian McKellen in King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Pillowman.

So take a trip to Avenue Q!

(31 Oct & 1 Nov 2008)

31 Oct – 1 Nov 2008 Fri & Sat, 08:00PM Esplanade Theatre Studio Standard – S$30

“…as if they have always been one: Ligeti’s music and Javanese dance… Not only an unbelievable poetry arises from the complicity between dance and music, she (Sen Hea Ha) also moves the usually secret message of Asian dance to a European audience’s conceivable and close nearness…” – Tiroler Tageszeitung
Sen Hea Ha has studied traditional and contemporary Korean dance since the age of four, with an emphasis on ritualistic and ceremonial dance forms. The Taman Budaya Surakarta Dance Theatre is known for accomplished dancers schooled in the classical Javanese dance traditions. In this new piece, Infinitâ, with classical dancers from Solo, Central Java, and with music – piano etudes -from György Ligeti, she explores the infinite possibilities of melding classical Javanese movement with modern music. Not to be missed.

Took my 6 year old to this. She loved it!
We thought Ruthie (Julie Wee) was just great.
The play itself could have done with some shortening. Alot of the kids during the show I went to were distracted at times because they were faster than the show! Still worth going to though.

If all the world’s a stage, what scene would you offer as a last encore?

Trapped in a limbo between existences, seven deceased Singaporeans are reading their own obituaries.

A postman, a teacher, a grassroots leader, a businesswoman, an actress, a taxi-driver and his wife, seven elderly strangers with little in common in Life; now find themselves together as they face the greatest adventure of their lives – Death. Before this wait is over, they must each revisit, relive, re-enact the most significant moment in their life. Only then can they move on.

At turns funny and profoundly-moving, FIRST LIGHT is a thought-provoking play that invites you to step beyond the veil to discover how sometimes, it is only after death that you really begin to live.

KYLIE MINOGUE

KYLIEX2008

After wowing audiences and critics across the UK and Europe with the KylieX2008 Tour which kicked off in Paris in May 2008, Live Nation Asia is excited to announce Kylie Minogue one night only performance in Singapore on 25th November 2008.

“A show not to be missed”, the KylieX2008 Tour is an enormous US$16million production that has already traveled to more than 21 countries across the UK and Europe. More than half a million people have seen the show and been wowed by Kylie’s performance, her first class production and her dazzling Jean Paul Gaultier wardrobe.

Quoted by Kylie, “The eclectic mix of sounds on X is afforded me the opportunity to explore and develop a new live show that is fresh, exhilarating and innovative. After two years of celebratory tours, KylieX2008 is a look to the future but definitely includes favorites alongside the new”

“As a production, this show certainly takes some beating. From the moment that Kylie first appeared. Floating high above the stage … to the final flourish of I Should Be So Lucky, delivered to an audience engulfed in golden confetti and gaily colored balloons, the cast of acrobat/dancers, musicians and behind the scenes technicians never missed a trick.” The Times, London

The heroic star who has firmly set her cancer battle behind her, proved she is the undisputed queen of the pop landscape with her KylieX2008 tour. She is back and better than ever!

“Minogue reinvents herself as the ultimate 21st-century girl…..Pop is the highest of the arts, because it encompasses all the others.. (and Kylie) is the ultimate practitioner of this ultimate discipline.. (and) on the issue of her supremacy, I won’t give an inch…Kylie is actually a pop genius.. The show (sets) a new standard for state-of-the-art mise-en-sc讥.. It’s Kylie’s mortality, her humanity, which elevates her above, say, Madonna. As she accepts flowers from the big boys and kisses from the little girls, she exudes easy charm.”

Cameroon-born, French-based musician Roland Tchakounté is living proof that the blues knows no boundaries. Blending American blues with African traditions sung in the Bamileke dialect, Roland draws his inspiration for this fusion of sounds from two mythical composers: John Lee Hooker and Ali Farta Touré. Unlike other aspiring blues players so keen on mimicking their idols that they lose their own identity in the process, Roland Tchakounté confirms his by telling his won story and in the process, delivers a unique and mesmerising bluesy sound.

Roland has honed his delivery of the blues from playing at various festivals such as the renowned Festival in France, recognized as one of the leading European festivals for Afro-American music and the Chicago Blues Festival.

Timbre Concert Series is a platform to accentuate quality international musicians and performers in a dinner concert setting at any of Timbre’s venues; allowing together all of Timbre’s well-loved facets under one roof – great food and drinks in a atmospheric environment accompanied by excellent music.

My friends and I saw this the other night and quite enjoyed it. The play doesn’t say that much about anything really. It’s just silly fun. There’s a quite a bit of overacting in it but it sort of suits what they’re doing with them being drunk and all. Jason Chan was good. Really felt his struggle and he has alot of charm. He can really act! Cynthia Lee was pretty funny as the ah lian too. I know someone just like that in my office! Scary! Worth watching for some fun!

Quite funny! Liked the second half more once they got into the party.
Yeah – liked the Andy (Jason Chan) Jo (Wendy Kweh) part the best. Jason is very real in his portrayal of the character. I found the others a bit over the top. Wendy Kweh was ok. Even though Cynthia was a bit stereotyped, I agree, she was pretty funny in parts.

Xie Tai Chen (10:07:30) : edit

Disagree with you all. I was so bored. I wanted to leave but I felt ripped off if I didn’t stay because of the ticket price. I saw other people leaving at half time. It was just so slow and pointless. I saw Michael in “The Pillow Man” and he was exactly the same. I thought he was mentally retarded in this play as well! I really did! It was a real mix of professional actors and some amateur actors like Shane Mardjuki. Really bad. Why do directors get actors to act like that? Either they think we’re stupid or they really don’t have a clue.

Once upon a time in the Eternal Kingdom, there lived a Queen who wanted everything and everyone to be perfect. So, when her subjects turn 18, they are sent for “Enhancement”— a programme to correct their flaws.

The Queen holds a beauty pageant every year where she crowns herself as the winner. One day, her Magic Mirror, who cannot lie without literally cracking up, reveals to her that a new beauty has come of age—her own step-daughter Snow White.

Poor Snow White is ordered to undergo a nip-tuck by the creepy Royal Surgeon. But she runs away to the Outer Limits, where she encounters junk, vermin and the rapping, breakdancing Seven Dwarfs—outcasts banished from the Kingdom for falling short of the Queen’s standards.

Will Snow White escape from the Queen’s manicured clutches? Will her Prince Charming recognise true love in her bad hair state? And will the Queen ever stop coming up with new titles for herself and finally retire?

W!LD RICE’s new pantomime is a hilarious, heart-warming musical comedy about keeping it real. “ The German godfathers of electronica – … helped birth dance, techno and the building blocks of hip hop…” – Independent.ie.com

Approximately 40 years ago, in the cold, clean recesses of one Kling Klang studio laboratory located in Düsseldorf, Germany, a collective that called itself Kraftwerk began churning out from an assortment of electronic equipment and their own secret inventions what they termed “machine music”, the likes of which had never been heard before. Cold, precise, minimal, repetitive and almost wholly electronically-processed, this new brand of stiff was released on an unsuspecting public in the 70s, and pop music was never the same again…

Beginning as a duo in Germany’s late 60s experimental music scene and evolving into a notoriously reclusive synth-pop quartet in the mid 70s, Kraftwerk is today both an institution and an enigma. The group that once expressed an intention to “make music that sounded like Germany” has had its distinctive sound – drum machine beats, synths, vocodered vocals – copied and sampled by musicians such as David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, New Order, Art of Noise and Afrika Bambaataa across genres from techno and new wave to rock and hip-hop.

Strikingly antiseptic and yet strangely compelling, Kraftwerk’s spare melodies, precise programming and curiously facile lyrics (“Radioactivity is in the air for you and me”) reveal a deadpan humour and an appreciation of the absurd. Experienced live, a Kraftwerk show is a perfectly synchronised visual spectacle with four besuited guys (and their robot doubles) standing quite still behind consoles onstage, against a backdrop of perfectly synchronized visual projection, lights, robotics and pure theatre.

The Philharmonic Winds in Concert (7 Dec 2008)

7 Dec 2008
Sun, 07:30PM

Approx 2 hrs

Approx 20 mins

Esplanade Concert Hall

Standard – S$50, S$35, S$25, S$20, S$15
Box Seat – S$50

The Philharmonic Winds presents wind orchestra classics less heard in this unique concert. Works presented in this concert are landmark pieces in the development of the wind orchestra repertoire.

Works featured in this concert include British composer Gordon Jacob’s William Byrd Suite, composed in the 20th century as a tribute to the English Renaissance master-composer William Byrd who lived more than 300 years ago. Karel Husa’s Music for Prague 1968 is a deeply evocative work commemorating the Prague Spring reform movement in the old Czechoslovakia. Its power to move led to it being later transcribed for full orchestra, taking the opposite direction from usual orchestral transcriptions for bands.

Moving on to the traditional music of the Americas, Herbert Owen Reed’s La Fiesta Mexicana is inspired by various forms of music he heard while living in Mexico. Interestingly, all three pieces demonstrate influence by bells in different ways, and the audience will hear bell tones painting vivid pictures of churches and landscapes.

Finally, renowned saxophonist Vincent Gnojek, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Kansas, USA, returns to perform with Philwinds. Paul Creston’s Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra is one of the most significant compositions for the relatively-younger saxophone, only breaking into the orchestra lineup in the last century, and Philwinds is honoured to have Vince back with us again.

These pieces have been integral in forming the backbone of wind orchestra music, and any wind orchestra afficionado must grab this chance to hear them at least once in their lifetimes!

Conducted by Music Director Leonard Tan

In support of a special edition of the critically-acclaimed album, Songs from the Labyrinth – a personal tribute to late 16th-century Elizabethan composer, John Dowland (1563–1626) – Sting will embark on a tour of Australia and Asia, joined by esteemed lutenist, Edin Karamazov.

Songs from the Labyrinth began as a Deutsche Grammophon recording project in 2006 which surpassed all expectations by debuting at the top of the classical charts in the US, UK, France, Canada & Germany. The album remained on Billboard’s #1 classical charts for fifteen consecutive weeks and was the top selling classical album of both 2006 and 2007.

To accompany the upcoming tour, Deutsche Grammophon will release a special edition of Songs from the Labyrinth which features three bonus tracks, including Sting’s own Fields of Gold and Message in a Bottle, which he performs with Edin Karamazov on lute, as well as a special, live version of Dowland’s Have You Seen the Bright Lily Grow, recorded in New York in September 2006.

Sting was first introduced to the music of John Dowland in the early 1980s, and has said that Dowland’s music has been “gently haunting” him for more than twenty years. Songs from the Labyrinth honors the life of John Dowland by not only recreating his music, but also his words. Sting incorporates short recitations of a letter John Dowland wrote in 1595 to Queen Elizabeth’s Secretary of State, Sir Robert Cecil, into the album, pleading his allegiance to the English throne in the hope of an invitation into the Royal Court, providing further insight to Dowland’s life and times.

Edin Karamazov has been Sting’s partner in this project from its conception. A protégé of the legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache, Edin Karamazov began his musical career with the classical guitar, continuing his studies of the Baroque Lute at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. His 2003 recording Come Heavy Sleep set new standards for lute playing and, as a soloist, he has performed and recorded with leading international early music ensembles and artists including the Hilliard Ensemble, Hesperion XX, Mala Punica and Andreas Scholl.

Joining Sting and Edin Karamazov on this tour is the British a cappella choir Stile Antico, who are featured in all the European performances of Songs from the Labyrinth to date, giving vocal accompaniment to some of the more raucous tavern songs and gentle lullabies that are found in Dowland’s wide-ranging music. An ensemble in their own right, Stile Antico have won numerous awards for their recordings of 16th and 17th music as well as a Grammy award nomination for Best Small Ensemble Performance.

Fans in Asia will get this chance to hear the unique collaboration of Sting and Edin Karamazov and to discover the music of John Dowland, interpreted and presented for today’s audiences.

momentous event will turn the destinies of 4 characters: An Anglican priest, a French lieutenant, an exceptional tenor and the one he loves, a wonderful soprano and singing partner. During this Christmas eve, the unthinkable will happen: rifles will be left at the bottom of the trenches to go, candle in hand, to see those opposite, shake their hands, exchange a cigarette and a piece of chocolate, wish them “Merry Christmas”…

A Vacant Affair: Reasons to Leave (26 Dec 2008)

26 Dec 2008
Fri, 09:30PM

Esplanade Recital Studio

Standard – S$25

Since the release of its debut EP during the Baybeats 2006 festival, A Vacant Affair (AVA) has grown from strength to strength, garnering new fans and breaking staid, old stigmas about local music.

The band’s journey has definitely not been easy, but its steadfast friendship and belief in the presence of hope during trying times have continually inspired the band to adopt a more mature approach to both music and life, and deliver intense, uncompromising live performances.

Currently the band is in the process of completing the recording of its first full-length concept album – a thematic work which incorporates old and new influences while still keeping the honest and sincere vibes of the EP.

Now be among the first to hear them perform music from their new CD live. Expect dissonant guitars over frantic percussion, rhythmic bass lines over thought-provoking songwriting.
