Combining controlled energy and evocative melodies, the trio played with the improvisational instincts of a jazz trio and the raw energy of a punk-rock band – a blend that made them one of the definitive rock groups of the ’70s and ’80s. The band manifested an understated virtuosity, applying their chops within reggae grooves and intricate arrangements. Between Summers’ trenchant and ground breaking guitar work, Copeland’s deceptively complex poly-rhythms and Sting’s loping bass and soaring vocals, They were indisputably the most adventurous ambassadors of the new wave genre then known spawning instantly recognizable hits such as “Roxanne”, “So Lonely”, “Message in a Bottle”, “Walking on the Moon”, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” and “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”.The Police dominated the top of the charts and radio airwaves worldwide with five #1 albums and a succession of top 10 hit singles. Incubus LIVE (7 March)

DATE: 7 Mar 2008 Fri, 8:00PM

VENUE: Fort Canning Park

LAMC Productions the Promoter of the show says “we are extremely excited to announce this show, as fans have wanted to see INCUBUS perform on our shores for a very long time. The last time they were in Asia in 2005, Incubus performed to sell out venues in Malaysia, Manila & Bangkok.”

Incubus rose to become one of the most popular alt-metal bands of the new millennium, setting themselves apart from a crowded field with a somewhat less-negative outlook and tireless touring. Formed in 1991 in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Calabasas, CA, Incubus are Brandon Boyd (vocals, percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), José Pasillas (drums) and Chris Kilmore (turntablist). Their early funk-metal sound was heavily influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but broadened over the next few years to incorporate thrash, rap-metal, post-grunge rock, and grinding alt-metal à la Korn or the Deftones. By the time the group graduated from high school, they had already been playing all-ages shows around southern California on a regular basis. In 1995, Incubus added hip-hop turntablist DJ Lyfe (aka Gavin Koppel) to their lineup and recorded the independently released album Fungus Amongus. That, coupled with their strong local following, helped the band get a deal with Epic subsidiary Immortal.

Fans will get to enjoy past Hits as well as songs from the Latest Album Light Grenades.

Theatre Studio
10pm (75mins, no intermission, followed by All Stars Jam till late)
$48 (includes one drink)

Buckle up or risk being blown away by the explosive SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS!

Made up of six musicians – trumpeter Tabu Zombie, saxophonist Motoharu, pianist Josei, bass player Akita Goldman, drummer Midorin, and agitator Shacho (yes, “agitator”, because he stirs up the audience) – SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS gives pulsating live performances that are rough around the edges, unabashedly entertaining, and constantly kept at boiling point.

They got together back in 2001 after meeting at a Tokyo club event, putting “life” and “live” back into the Tokyo club scene, then dominated by deejays. Their international breakthrough came when renowned British DJ Gilles Peterson introduced them on his radio programme in 2005. At the BBC World Wide Award later that year, the band was awarded the John Peel Play More Jazz Award.

The term the band has coined for their music gives a clue to what it sounds like – “death jazz”. The aggressive alternative jazz performances of SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS have gotten so popular that the band is now one of the hottest bands in Japan. It has performed in over 12 European countries and major international music festivals including Montreux and North Sea, and has more recently played at the Glastonbury and Fuji Rock festivals.

SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS would be a tough act to follow, but stick around for more superb music at the All Stars Jam. Both international and local musicians will appear onstage to stretch out an unparalleled set of wondrous improvisation.

Admission only for patrons aged 18 and above.

“Amazing showmanship… a Jazz Goddess.” – All About Jazz

“… combining various music styles and cultures in a way as if they always meant to be together…” – J. Lyon Layden

Myriad tones lovingly coaxed out of a muted trumpet, groovy rhythms, exciting solos and kickin’ rap vocals… This is the famous sound of Saskia Laroo and her multi-national unit, a vivacious, pulsating blend of hip-hop, jazz, salsa, funk, reggae and world music.

Saskia Laroo is a rare breed, one of a few women trumpet stylists in the world. To watch her command the stage is to be seized by the sultry glamour of this musical goddess, dubbed the “Lady Miles Davis”. Saskia merges an ocean of today’s sounds with a deep regard for musical traditions, and a flair for the chic. And she can really play. Everything that lent lustre to Miles Davis and his unforgettable style of trumpeting is there in Saskia.

Her most interesting achievement is that she created her own world of sound by fusing jazz with hip-hop and rap. This amalgam, often termed “doo-bop”, has an addictive rhythm that propels people to dance. And its spirited quality is enhanced by vocals which range from soulful ballads to edgy rap, all of which can be expected of this highly anticipated performance.

Kick it with Saskia and her cohort of musicians! And if more great music is what you desire, the Midnight Jam following, featuring both international and local musicians, is set to impress. Don’t miss it!

Admission only for patrons aged 18 and above.

Earth Wind Fire Experience

The Earth Wind & Fire Experience featuring The Al McKay Allstars

Theatre
8pm (90mins, no intermission)$58*, $88**, $118, $148
Limited concessions for students, NSF and senior citizens: $40*, $60**

“Their groundbreaking mixture of jazz, funk, soul and pop influences paved the way for artists from Prince to the Fugees…” – Rolling Stone

Described by Rolling Stone as “innovative yet popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing, Earth, Wind & Fire changed the sound of black pop in the 70s – their encyclopedic sound topping Latin-funk rhythms with gospel harmonies, unerring horns, Philip Bailey’s sweet falsetto, and various exotic ingredients”.

Today, the incredible music of the band that has touched the hearts of two generations still heats up airwaves and dancefloors around the world, and the band is possibly one of the most covered in existence. And keeping the musical spirit of Earth, Wind & Fire alive is former founding member and the creator of the band’s sound and most of its hits, five-time Grammy award-winner, Al McKay. Together with his band, the Al McKay Allstars, which contains some of the world’s top musicians, Al has released an album, Al Dente, which features Earth, Wind & Fire’s hits as well his newest original tracks.

A hot, young guitarist who had performed with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, funk progenitors, Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd St. Band, the late great Sammy Davis Jr., Andy Williams, The Sylvers and Isaac Hayes, Al joined the freshly-minted band out of Chicago who called themselves Earth, Wind & Fire in 1973. From then till 1981 when he left to take a break from musical stardom, Al was responsible not only for a lion’s share of the group’s instantly recognisable sound, but for some of its most enduring hits. Then in the early 90s, he founded The Al McKay Allstars with a large and revolving cast of superior supporting players to explore new musical territory even as they celebrated his music with Earth, Wind & Fire, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The current band consists of Al McKay (guitar), Tim Owens (vocals), DeVere Duckett (vocals), Claude Woods (vocals), original Earth Wind and Fire member Michael Harris (trumpet), Ed Wynne (saxophone), Bill Churchville (trumpet), Ryan Porter (trombone), Freddie Flewelen (bass), David Leach (percussion), Aaron Haggerty (drums), Benjamin Dowling (keyboards), and Bryan Loren Hudson (keyboards).

Catch them live, for “the Al McKay Allstars may be the only group capable of rendering this music with the original feel… for fans of EWF and American funk music… the band is a phenomenon absolutely not to be missed” (Java Jazz Festival).

Get Up, Stand Up! – Reggae’s Greatest Songs
by Desmond Foster and band, with guest MC/DJ Papa Dee
Sweden

Theatre Studio
10pm (90 mins, no intermission)
$38 (includes one drink)

Get up, stand up, move it to the reggae beats of Desmond Foster, hip-hop and ragga master of genuine ol skool Jamaican groove and funky rhymes, and his gang of musicians in this tribute to the greatest of reggae masters.

Celebrating music from Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and Bunny Wailer, the talents of Desmond Foster, guest MC/DJ Papa Dee (of Brooklyn Funk Essentials) and the rest of the crew take reggae to another level.

Desmond’s Jamaican roots shine through on his self-produced reggae-album Under Oath. That he grew up in England and now lives in Sweden might not be as obvious as is the fact that he is a natural singer and a talented multi-instrumentalist. The sought-after musician who has played with David Byrne, Boy George, Brooklyn Funk Essentials and reggae greats – Aswad, Dennis Brown, Lady Saw, Gregory Isaacs – is as comfortable behind the bass as he is behind the guitar and the mic. Desmond is also a long-time hiphop/ragga producer and lover of timeless organic grooves that only spontaneous live-sessions can bring.

Guest artist reggae MC, DJ, and producer Papa Dee a.k.a. Daniel Wahlgren, a native of Sweden, brings his ever-charismatic personality and funky dancehall rhythms and rhymes to the party. Fellow Swedes, drummer Christer Björklund and keyboardist Jonahgold have played with several top Swedish artists, while bassist Anders Kappelin is a reggae-specialist having played with international dance-hall artist Million Styles. From London is keyboardist/ vocalist Glenn Scott, who has performed with Blacknuss Allstars and Craig David. French percussionist Philippe Monrose from Brooklyn Funk Essentials plays with most of the big names that pass through Paris. Sound-engineer Internal Dread is a regular with acts like reggae superstar and poet Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Together with this band, Desmond, who jams on the studio sofa with the same intensity that he brings to the stage, builds tracks with a genuine old-time Jamaican sound and feel, flavoured with everything from soul, hip-hop and ragga to pure pop.

(25 April)

DATE: 25 Apr 2008, Fri, 9.30pm

VENUE: Esplanade Recital Studio

TICKET PRICE: $25

The Great Spy Experiment are undoubtedly one of Singapore’s top indie bands. Their music draws from a diverse range of musical influences and is described as ‘a champagne-fuelled orgy of pop, indie, rock and dance.’ As much guitar-led as it is beat-driven, with indie riffs juxtaposing irresistible pop hooks and dance textures overlaying danceable rock grooves, the music is created with the dancefloor in mind and the bed-room at heart. In three years, the band has become the darlings of Singaporean independent music with numerous shows under their belt, both here and overseas. These include their performances in South-by-Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, the SA Indie Fest in San Antonio, Texas as well as an appearance at New York’s Central Park.

This concert is yet another defining moment in the band’s musical journey. It’s the band’s first-ever solo show in Singapore and it catches them on the brink of transition, standing on the verge of the next great experiment, in search of the next great love.

young & W!LD, a division of W!LD RICE presents The Hypochondriac, an outrageous comedy by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin Molière and directed by Christina Sergeant.

Argan is a wealthy man who is convinced that he is plagued by any number of obscure and fatal diseases. His doctors and their pharmacists get rich by providing him with outrageous remedies at even more outrageous prices. Argan decides to marry off his daughter to a doctor’s son, to ensure cheaper medical care. His daughter, unsuprisingly, loves another man; and so the whole family, led by their feisty maid Toinette, have to conspire to stop the marriage and knock some sense into Argan.

Molière is one of France’s greatest playwrights and his plays have been translated into dozens of languages over three centuries. New versions appear regularly, attesting to the captivating comedy and contemporary relevance of his plays.

The Hypochondriac is one of Molière’s most popular plays and satirises the medical profession of Molière’s day as well as the blindness that happens when common sense is lost. The former may be true of 17th century medical practice but the latter is timeless and universal!

This new translation by Gerard Murphy brings out the wit and wackiness of Molière’s original, revelling in raucous and raunchy delight. The language is fresh and contemporary, and the timeless comic devices are all there! Directed by Christina Sergeant, one of Singapore’s most experienced theatre practitioners, the production adapts the playful Commedia del ‘Arte style into a fast-paced, laugh-a-minute treat, full of movement and music.

The rollicking 2-hour performance is suitable for anyone who enjoys a great evening of laughter!

“Laughter is the best medicine!”

Mosaic: Sonny Rollins (28 May)

28 May 2008
Wed, 9pm

Esplanade Concert Hall

Standard – S$118, S$88, S$58

Incredible though it sounds, living tenor sax legend and Harlem-born master improviser Sonny Rollins has helped build the world of jazz for almost six decades.

Through his exploration of various styles including jazz, calypso, hard bop and avant-garde over the decades, he has remained known for the intelligence, warmth, humour and deep expressiveness with which he plays and acclaimed for his improvisational brilliance, inspiring such accolades as “No other instrumentalist better epitomises the tightrope walk between spontaneity and organisation implicit in taking an improvised solo” (Ken Burns, Jazz: The Definitive Sonny Rollins) and “when the saxophonist Sonny Rollins is in the mood, he can turn the dissection of a tune into a miracle” (The New York Times)

Sonny burst onto the jazz scene in the late 40s as an exciting teenage saxophonist with such legends as Theolonious Monk, Fats Navarro and Bud Powell. He subsequently joined the Miles Davis Quintet and the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet in the 50s, and proceeded to work with other jazz greats, leading his own jazz band, experimenting with different kinds of music while setting the bar for sax solos, releasing albums to rave reviews, and making music that still inspires jazzmen today. And no wonder, for the Grammy-and-multi-award-winner is still jazz’s most exacting, exhilarating and inspiring practitioner.

Singapore Arts Festival 2008 (23 May-22 Jun 08)

23 May – 22 June 08

OVER RECENT YEARS, THE SINGAPORE ARTS FESTIVAL CONSISTENTLY BRINGS TOGETHER A FINE MIX OF LOCAL, REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL WORKS, OFTEN ON THE CUTTING EDGE AND IN A CITY IDEAL FOR AN EMBRACING FESTIVAL” – RealTime

“…MULTICULTURAL, INTERDISCIPLINARY, TECH-SAVVY” – Asian Wall Street Journal

“ THE ADVENTUROUS FACE OF SINGAPORE…” The Age

The Singapore Arts Festival first began life in 1977 as a national arts festival celebrating local arts activity of Singapore’s diverse communities. Over the last three decades, the Festival has played a symbiotic and catalytic role in the development of the artistic and cultural life of Singapore. It has helped to transform the city’s cultural landscape, turning it into one of Asia’s major cultural capitals today. It has influenced the work of artists and generated a growing public demand for the arts, spawning new cultural platforms, events, and movements that help underpin the lively cultural scene in present Singapore.

Today, the Festival is characterised by a progressive and innovative spirit, committed to commissioning new works by principally Singapore and Asian artists, investing in works that bridges disciplines, cultures, language and geographical boundaries; exploring, among others, contemporary issues related to history, memory, migration, and urban living; discovering emergent and promising artists; and encouraging regional and international artistic exchanges and collaborations. The Festival also features an extensive programme of free outdoor performances island-wide, bringing the arts to the doorsteps of Singaporeans. Placing festival networking as an important process of cultural dialogue and festival collaborations, the Festival championed and co-founded the Association of Asian Performing Arts Festivals in 2004, and has since served as its chair and secretariat, overseeing a membership of 30 organisations in the Asia, Europe, America and Australasia.

The Festival remains the largest singular event in Singapore’s arts calendar, inviting artists from more than 20 countries, offering more than 500 activities attracting up to 700,000 attendances – a 4-week infusion of performances and events that inspire and capture the public imagination of the city.

For more information about the Festival, get a copy of the 30th anniversary publication of the Festival “Making Visible the Invisible : Three Decades of the Singapore Arts Festival”, authored by Venka Purushothaman, published in December 2007.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea By 1927 (UK) (6-7 Jun 08)

6-7 Jun 2008
8pm

Esplanade Recital Studio

Standard – S$35

A theatrical cabaret which combines live music and performance with animation and film, a surreal satire for the discerning viewer.” – The Independent

“Impeccable choreography, perfect timing, magnificent stage presence.” - Time Out

To a wicked combination of 1920s cabaret, live performance and back-projected animation, add a generous dose of silver screen glamour and weird, twisted humour and you have Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

Dive into a series of warped fairytale-like vignettes delivered by two deadpan, morbidly white-faced, frightfully refined sisters, accompanied on the piano by a third. Watch them narrate the gruesomely sweet “Biscuit Tin Revolution” where gingerbread men rise up against a pastry chef in a tide of rape and pillage that leaves the streets running red with raspberry jam. Then see them turn into two little pinafore-clad sisters whose blank faces recall the Midwich Cuckoos, and whose parents, who came to an unfortunate end in a wishing-well accident, are buried in the family cemetery in the bedroom.

Devilishly entertaining and deliciously nasty, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is executed with such breathtaking wit and aplomb, you cannot help but fall for its ingeniously sinister charm.

A word of caution: Try not to catch the eyes of the eerie sisters as they choose a “new friend” from the audience to take the place of their dead grandmother…
